摘要： 23,848. Baird, A. H. Nov. 20. Berths; mattresses. -Collapsible berths of the kind described in Specifications No. 20,816, A.D. 1891, No. 10,749, A.D. 1894, No. 10,189, A.D. 1895, No. 15,861. A.D. 1897, No. 21,523, A.D. 1900, and No. 13,113, A.D. 1904, having sets of upright posts articulated together by linkages, are constructed, as shown in Fig. 1, with the uprights extending only as high as the lee-rails of the upper berths. The head and foot uprights are maintained parallel by the lee-rails 10, 11. The end-fitting 12 of the rail slides into a groove in the socket-fitting 14, which is secured to the upright 1 by a strap fitting 15. By these fittings the end-rails are permitted to swivel round the uprights. When the berths are collapsed, the movable fittings 6 of the crossed links 5 either rise clear of the uprights, or slide down the uprights. In the former case, the fittings 6 have spigots 2 adapted to fit into recesses in the upper fittings 3, and the sliding fittings 6 are guided by connecting-links 4. Diagonal braces 8, attafhed to the deck by bolts and nuts, are provided to stiffen the uprights. Some of the uprights may be bolted to the deck, but preferably one end set is attached to the ship's side, or to the deck stanchions. A mattress of the kind described in Specification No. 13,113, A.D. 1904, is supported and locked in position by the swivelling support 20 pivoted to the bolt 19 on the lower tube 10 of the lee-rail, and by the pivoted finger 24 on the crossbar 22.

Berths.-The invention is an improvement on the apparatus described in Specification No. 20,816, A.D. 1891, and is shown in plan in Fig. 2 and in end elevation in Fig. 3. The corner pillars 1 are connected by lazy-tongs mechanisms 4, each of which is connected to the others by vertical pickets 3, 3 , the alternate ones being grooved to allow adjustment of the berth for one or two persons. The ends of the spring mattress 10 are connected to the pickets 12 of similar lazy-tongs, so that, when the berth is collapsed and the diagonal wires 9 of the mattress come together, and thereby increase its effective length, the pickets move outwards and the mattress is kept taut. The lazytongs 7 are carried by brackets 6 supported from the pickets 3 of the end frames, and the centre pivots are maintained a constant distance apart by a central bar 5. A paillasse is provided partially divided down the centre so as to be available for the single or double width, and a lee board is fitted along one side so that when turned down it can be used as a seat.

Cabins. - Comprises improvements in portable rooms, such as ship's cabins, formed by partitions and vertical posts, and consists in forming the posts P2 of cruciform or equivalent cross-section. The vertical edges of the partitions D are bevelled so that they fit between the webs of the posts. Corner posts P1 are made of T-section. Deck and ceiling sockets K are provided, and the posts P2 are somewhat shorter than the distance between the deck and upper sockets, so that the upper ends may be inserted in the sockets and the posts then dropped into place. Lugs k2 prevent rotation of the posts in the sockets, and pins p2 afford additional security to the partitions. The angles at the corners of the rooms may be other than right-angles according to the bevelling of the partition edges.

The ring is divided into four circular chambers A, B, C, D of different cross-section; A being the smallest and D the largest. The exhaust outlets of the cylinders are connected in threes by two pipes to the chamber A, the gases passing from one chamber to the other by perforations in the dividing- walls and escaping to atmosphere by tangential and rearwardly - directed outlets h from the chamber D. The chambers may be divided into two so as to form separate silencers for each set of cylinders. In a modification, the chambers are formed by four tubes of different diameters, the tubes surrounding the cylinders.

To avoid the gap below the joint caused by the necessity for having a clearance space, the fitting 4 is provided with a sliding piece 9. The hcok 7 engages the cup 3, attached to the post 1, and the sliding piece 9 fits closely against the cup 3, and is maintained in position by the snug 11. As the hook 7 and the partition fall into place, relative movement takes place between the cross-plate 5 of the fitting 4 and the sliding piece 9. The flanges on the sliding piece cover the gap which would otherwise be formed below the cup 3. Specifications No. 8703, A.D. 1901, and No. 13,113, A.D. 1904, are referred to.
