[Class 140] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXIII] In cellular panel or like work wherein sheets of plywood or other material are spaced apart by web elements which outline the cellular construction and are joined at opposite edges to the sheets, the web elements are set up in a jig so that each has a sinuous form with a plurality of crests extending in each direction, oppositely extending crests of adjacent elements being close to, or contacting each other, and these crests being bonded together by glue &c. without applying lateral pressure to the elements. The cells may be of hexagonal or other form. In the Figure, the jig comprises a metal or plywood base 1 to which are secured parallel bars of wood &c. which are slotted as at 3 to form lines of projections 4, about which the web elements are threaded; marginal portions of the base may receive fillets 5 forming a frame for the cellular structure and the fillets may be notched to receive the ends of the web elements. Bonding material is then applied to the edges of the strips and the sheets of plywood &c. applied thereto. The base 1 may form a part of the composite material, the fillets 5 being bonded thereto. The construction is applicable to surface construction on aircraft, walls, doors, ceilings, floors, &c. Specifications 556,620 and 625,036, [both in Group XXIII], are referred to.

[Class 17 (ii)] A foot-arch support, separate from a boot or shoe and insertable therein to present an arch raised above the sole of the boot or shoe and of a length shorter than that of the boot or shoe, is made from laminations of highly compressed wood veneers united together by an adhesive which is proof against moisture, acid and heat emanating from the foot of the wearer. The support is shaped under compression and heat, between dies which may form an inner and/or outer flange extending longitudinally of the support. A metatarsal dome may be formed therein or a dome of sponge-rubber &c. may be formed separately and then attached to the support. The support may be re-entrantly curved at its forward edge and may be provided with perforations to effect ventilation and to increase resilience. The support may be encased in or faced by leather, rubber, &c. united thereto by adhesive &c. In a modification, the support includes laminations of fabric.

A tractor has an element 18 disposed at or towards its rear end in such a manner that it is forced upwardly by engagement with the ground if the tractor rears, transmission means 22 causing the movement to stop the engine. The transmission means may be a Bowden cable connecting the engine fuel control with a lever 6 which turns about a pivot 8 when the element 18 is displaced upwardly against spring pressure in a sleeve 14 by rearward tilting of the tractor, the sleeve being carried by a plate 12 having a slidable connection with a fixed stud 10 to permit the movement. The element 18 may be adjusted telescopically and clamped at 20 so that a shafted foot 19 is about four inches from the ground. Pillar nuts secured to the differential housing 1 may form the pivot 8 and stud 10. Alternatively, the device may be connected to the tractor by a bracket.

    • 625,036. Cellular panel &c. work. BAKER, W. F., and OLIVER, A. June 24, 1946, No. 18873. [Class 145(ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In cellular panel or like constructional work wherein sheets of plywood or other material are spaced by sinuous web elements outlining the cells and joined at opposite edges to the sheets, perforations are provided in the web elements between their edges to give communication between all the cells, the cells being also vented to the exterior of the structure. In the Figure, plywood sheets 1, 2, are connected by undular web elements comprising thinner plywood strips 3 bonded together at 4 to form cells 6, the strips having perforations 7 either between or through the bonds 4. Fillets 8 may be provided at the edges of the structure, and are vented by perforations 9; further perforations may be provided in the sheets 1, 2. The cells may be of hexagonal or other form. The web elements may be formed by perforating bundles of strips, or by bundling sheets, perforating the sheets along parallel lines, and cutting the bundled sheets between and parallel to the lines of perforations; the sheets may be bonded together along lines which are staggered in alternate sheets, so that when a bundle of strips is cut off, it may be expanded to form the cellular outline. The construction is applicable to surface construction on aircraft or vehicles, walls, doors, ceilings, floors, &c. Specifications 556,620 and 625,037 are referred to.
