    • 384,385. Making chains. LUTTS, C. G., 26, Dearborn Street, Salem, and LEAHY, A. M., 58, Partridge Avenue, Somerville, both in Massachusetts, U.S.A. Sept. 23, 1931, No. 26600. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1930. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Jointing by forging. -Relates to links for anchor chains &c., of the type which a r e formed of two U- shaped members 15, Fig. 2, and 27, Fig. 3, provided respectively with sockets 12 and ribbed spigots 18 which are drop-forged into interlocking connection in the building up of the chain, and consists in forming the members of portions of rolled metal stock, and forming the sockets during forging with lugs 16 which abut to form the link stud. Preferably the spigot member 27 is heattreated to increase its tensile strength over that of the original stock by 50 per cent. The sockets and spigot ends are tapered, and the spigot ends are flattened on opposite sides as at 29 and are connected to the main part by necks 26. The ribs 22 have straight shoulders on one side and are curved or tapered on the other. The tips 25 are conical with a maximum apex angle of 140‹. Preferable dimensions of the different parts are as follows : the crosssectional area of neck 26, 65-70 per cent of the area of stock ; the minor diameter of the tapered spigot 18 for the greater part of its length, 75 per cent of the stock diameter ; the cross-sectional area of the socket member near the tip of the socket, 90 per cent of the area of the stock ; and the length of such spigot end 18, about /6 of the total length of the link.
