    • A reader (10) for validating a secure tag (24). The reader (10) comprises: an optical source (14) operable to illuminate the secure tag (24); a processor (32) coupled to the optical source (14) and operable to activate and de-activate the optical source; and a luminescence detector (28) coupled to the processor and operable to measure a luminescence spectrum after a time delay has elapsed. The time delay may be based on a number generated by the reader (10) in a random or pseudo-random manner, or it may be received across a network from a remote server. The processor (32) is operable to access the time delay and to derive a luminescence signature from a luminescence spectrum measured by the luminescence detector (28). The processor (32) is then operable to create a control signature using the time delay, to compare the derived luminescence signature with the control signature, and to validate the secure tag (24) in the event of a match.

    • A method of creating a classifier for media validation is described. Information from all of a set of training images from genuine media items is used to form a segmentation map which is then used to segment each of the training set images. Features are extracted from the segments and used to form a classifier which is preferably a one-class statistical classifier. Classifiers can be quickly and simply formed, for example when the media is a banknote for different currencies and denominations in this way and without the need for examples of counterfeit banknotes. A media validator using such a classifier is described as well as a method of validating a banknote using such a classifier. In a preferred embodiment a plurality of segmentation maps are formed, having different numbers of segments. If higher quality counterfeit media items come into the population of media items, the media validator is able to react immediately by switching to using a segmentation map having a higher number of segments without the need for re-training.

    • A self-service terminal (SST) comprises: a first sensor for sensing a first condition at the SST and a second sensor for sensing a second condition at the SST. The conditions may relate to environmental characteristics, such as humidity or temperature; general characteristics; specific characteristics of the SST; or characteristics of fraudulent devices. The SST also has a memory for storing reference data indicative of conditions at the SST, where at least some of the stored reference data is indicative of conditions during normal operation. The SST has a processor coupled to the first sensor, the second sensor and the memory, where the processor is operable to (i) receive captured data from the sensor, (ii) retrieve the reference data from the memory, and (iii) compare the captured data with the reference data to determine if the captured data is indicative of abnormal conditions.
