The heating means may comprise electric or gas heaters, or preferably jets of hot air (28) which can be directed specifically at the required area. Alternatively, where the fabric is oscillated, the heating means may comprise an additional heated roller.

    • A pipe seal is disclosed which comprises a main body portion (1) adapted to be fixed to the wall (12) of a chamber, tank, or the like, a face plate (6) adapted to be secured to the body portion to surround, in use, a pipe (14) to be sealed, the body and face plate between them housing a deformable member (9) in contact with a seal (8), such that, on forcing the face plate toward the body portion, the deformable member, in use, deforms and presses the seal into sealing contact with the pipe. The design of this pipe seal allows the pipe to enter the chamber wall at an angle of, for example, up to 12 degrees from a right angle. Hence the end of a pipe could generate a cone of movement with an included angle of 24 degrees. The seal therefore permits considerable positional movement of the pipe to allow connection of the pipe to its termination point within the chamber.

    • A method of controlling the size of a fabric of a garment is disclosed which comprises overfeeding the fabric into a sewing machine while simultaneously providing a tape or cord to stabilise the sewn fabric, characterised in that the tape or cord is made from a material which can be eliminated or made extensible during subsequent processing. Preferably the tape or cord is made from a material which is water-soluble and will therefore dissolve during garment washing. However, especially where the garment will not be washed during subsequent processing, other materials can be employed such as heat-activated or steam-activated materials which become extensible on activation. The basis of the invention is that the tape or cord produced from the material will be sufficiently rigid so as to stabilise the drawn in garment fabric for application of the waistband, and yet will be removed or become extensible in subsequent processing before it reaches the wearer so that the fabric and waistband can expand during wear. By the use of the invention, the garment portion is initially rendered stable which is a major advantage in the later attachment of a waistband. The garment does not extend during the waistband application. During garment washing, the tape or cord preferably dissolves and the garment portion and waistband are able to stretch. Alternatively, subsequent heat or steam treatments cause the tape or cord to become extensible with the same effect.

    • A method of attaching a waistband to a garment is disclosed which comprises providing a strip (26) of waistband fabric having outer portions more extensible than the centre section, and presenting the fabric to a sewing machine through a folder (18) for attachment to a garment, characterised in that the folder is angled to the sewing zone (16) whereby to force the outer sections of the waistband strip to proceed faster than the central section resulting in a curve being formed during attachment to the garment. Since the strip does not have a shape until it is treated in accordance with the invention, it may be provided on a reel for continuous operation. Moreover, the angle at which the folder presents the waistband to the sewing zone can be altered whereby to give shapes that are not of constant curvature. The folder may be mechanically linked using, for example, a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder arrangement, to a knee-switch or foot-switch, to enable different degrees of curvature to be achieved at the operator's control.

    • A method of selectively altering the extensibility of a fabric across its width is disclosed, which comprises providing a fabric (10) having indeterminate longitudinal dimension and a width defined by first and second edges (14,16), the fabric having extensible yarns in the longitudinal dimension, and applying mechanical pressure and/or heat to selected areas whereby to weaken or lower the elasticity of the yarn selectively from one edge to the other. The elastic yarns may be selectively cut by a reciprocating or rotary die, preferably the latter. Alternatively, the yarns may merely be embossed so as selectively to thin them in the embossed area whereby to lower elasticity and increase extensibility. Additionally or alternatively, the yarns may be completely or partially melted by the application of heat to achieve the same effect. The main advantage of the invention is that a standard commercially available interlining material, having elastic, for example "Lycra" TM , threads running in the longitudinal direction may be employed without having to weave a special asymmetrical fabric.
