摘要： A method and apparatus for downloading ancillary program data to a DVR. An embodiment allows multimedia device users to select programs to record or download movie or music over a network, such as the Internet, from a content provider. The system automatically downloads and stores ancillary program data that is directly related to, and associated with, a program that has been selected for recording or content requested for download. When a user selects a program to view the user is offered the opportunity to browse ancillary program data associated with the program and view an ancillary program data. The service can charge the content provider or an advertiser for each time their ancillary program data is viewed by a user. The ancillary programming is deleted when the associated recorded program is deleted.

摘要： A method and apparatus for a multicasting multimedia content distribution system. A content server creates a schedule of transmission times for data streams and assigns the streams to multicast groups. DVRs receive the schedule from content server that contains content descriptions for each data stream along with the transmission times of each particular content description. The content server transmits the content across the Internet according to the published schedule via a multicast transmission designated for a particular multicast group. Each DVR determines the content for which it has an interest, finds the scheduled time for transmission for the content, schedules a recording time in its recording schedule, and joins the associated multicast group at the scheduled time. The DVR receives the multicast stream for the group and stores the stream on its local storage device for use by the DVR or for viewing by a user.

摘要： An authorized email control system receives email destined for a particular user. Inclusive, temporary and exclusive address books are provided for the user. The inclusive address book lists all the sender email addresses and domains names that the user wants to allow into his mailbox. If the received email message's sender is listed in the user's inclusive or temporary address book then the email is placed in the user's main mailbox. If the sender is listed in the user's exclusive address book, then the message is deleted. The invention truncates the body of the received email message to a user settable length which is sent through at least one extensible message filter that provides a pass/fail indicator and optionally provides reasons for a fail indication. If the truncated email body passes all of the filters, then the sender is added to an accepted sender list. Otherwise, the sender is warned that its email was rejected and the reason(s) why. The sender's domain name is then placed on an unaware domain list. The user is conditionally notified if the sender has been added to the sender list or unaware domain list, giving the user the option to add the sender to his inclusive or exclusive address book.
