    • An imaging system is disclosed including a first illumination source (10) for producing a first illumination field, a modulation system (14) for modulating the first illumination field, and an optical imaging system (16,20,21,22,50) for directing the modulated illumination field to an imaging surface (18) along a first optical path. In accordance with an embodiment, the imaging system includes a second illumination source (26) for producing a second illumination field, a first sub-assembly (32,34), a second sub-assembly (36,38,40) and a control assembly. The first sub-assembly (32,34) is for directing the second illumination field toward the imaging surface (18) along a second optical path that is different than and non-parallel with said first optical path. The first sub-assembly (32,34) includes a beam splitter sub-assembly (120,122) that includes a beam splitter and at least one lens. The second sub-assembly (36,38,40) is for receiving a portion of the second illumination field from the imaging surface, and includes a lens and a sensor for producing a sensor output signal. The control assembly is for adjusting a focal point (96,100,104,108) of the optical imaging system responsive to the sensor output signal (S 1 +S 2 ,S 3 +S 4 ).

    • An apparatus and method for picking a single printing plate (18 1 ) from a stack (20) of printing plates. The apparatus includes a plurality of suction cups (116), a peeler (162), a drive system (166) for displacing the suction cups (116) and the peeler (162) against the surface of the top printing plate (18 1 ) on the stack (20), a vacuum source for supplying a vacuum to the suction cups (116) to secure the suction cups (116) against the surface of the top printing plate (18 1 ), and a system for rotatably displacing the suction cups (116) relative to the peeler (162) to peel a portion of the top printing plate (18 1 ) off of the stack (20). The center line (CL) of rotation of the displacing system (100) is located at a contact point between the peeler (162) and the surface of the top printing plate (18 1 ). This prevents any relative motion of the top printing plate (18 1 ) against the next, underlying printing plate (18 2 ) on the stack (20) during the peeling operation.

    • A method for reducing artifacts in a color printed image (15a), that are perceivable by the naked eye, includes using a different imaging beam (39 versus 48) to start imaging each printing plate (13a, 14a) that is used for a different color plane. Alternatively, a different set of imaging beams may be used to image each printing plate (13a, 14a) used for a different color plane. The method does not require manipulating image data. The method diffuses some errors throughout the printed image (15a) and prevents some errors from being imaged and/or printed which reduces or eliminates the visible perception of artifacts.
