    • An apparatus (10) for treating a fluid to be injected into a subterranean hydrocarbon-bearing formation comprises a desalination system (12) having a fluid inlet (16) for receiving a first feed fluid (18) and a first fluid outlet (22) for delivering a first product fluid (20). The apparatus (10) also includes a selective ionic species removal plant (30) having a fluid inlet (36) for receiving a second feed fluid (34) and a fluid outlet (40) for delivering a second product fluid (38), wherein the second product fluid (38) has a preferred ionic concentration. A mixer (46) is provided for mixing at least a portion of the first product fluid (20) and at least a portion of the second product fluid (38) to provide a third or injection product fluid (48). Accordingly, injection fluid can be created which has a preferred ionic concentration suitable for injecting into a well (28).

    • A system for authenticating articles comprising: an authentication manager (40) for managing authentication information associated with the articles; a plurality of secure taggant reader instruments (20, 22, 23) for reading machine readable taggants associated with the articles, the taggants including the authentication or related information, and an instrument configuration manager (25) for secure on-line configuration of the instruments (20, 22, 23). Each taggant reader instrument (20, 22, 23) is operable to securely process and send authentication information derived from a taggant to the authentication manager (40). The authentication manager uses the received authentication information to identify suspicious events. When suspicious events are detected, the instrument configuration manager (25) is able to reconfigure at least some of the taggant reader instruments (20, 22, 23). Reconfiguration may also happen in the event of a product recall and/or taggant security compromise.

    • There is disclosed an improved tool, e.g. adapted to comprise at least part of a well completion assembly or well drilling assembly. The invention provides an improved downhole tool (or device) having a friction factor of the order of ten times less than those known from the prior art, e.g. of the order of 0.100 or less. Accordingly the invention provides a downhole tool (10; 10a;10b;10c;10d) , at least part of the downhole tool or device being made from Tungsten Disulphide (Tungsten Disulfide) . In a disclosed embodiment the at lest part comprises at least one surface of the downhole tool, the at least one surface comprising a bearing surface, e.g. a journal bearing surface and/or a thrust bearing surface.
