    • A hybrid drive system for a vehicle, such as an automobile (3), includes an internal combustion engine (2) and a drive motor (3) operable to propel the vehicle, an energy storage device (7) for storing energy to power the drive motor, a driver operable accelerator control (10) moveable from a zero to a maximum position to control the drive system and an arrangement (11) for increasing resistance to movement of the accelerator control at at least one selected position in its travel thereby to divide the travel of the control into two or more parts. A controller (8) is arranged to control the internal combustion engine (2) and drive motor 3 in dependence on the position of the driver's control (10). And the controller is arranged to control the internal combustion engine and drive motor according to a respective different mode of operation when the accelerator control is in each part of its travel. The controller may provide different modes of operation for acceleration of the vehicle from rest, including an eco mode where only the drive motor is employed, a max mode where both the internal combustion engine and drive motor are employed to obtain maximum acceleration and an intermediate standard mode where output of the internal combustion engine is limited in order to reduce fuel consumption. A driver can select a desired mode of operation by feeling resistance in movement of the accelerator control.

    • A data structure is transmitted from a first computer to a second computer by transmitting a plurality of messages from the first computer to the second computer. Each message contains data of a node of the structure and one or more references to child pointer locations in previously transmitted nodes. The data of each transmitted node is stored in the second computer, and the location of each node is stored in a table of addresses and the or each reference includes an index into the table of addresses. The first computer may then use indexes into the table to identify which nodes need updating, and thus avoid the need for the first computer to know how the second computer is allocating nodes in memory. The or each reference may include an index into an array of child pointers belonging to a node, may include the sequence number of the parent node of the node being transmitted and may also include the index into the parent node's children to the pointer to the node being transmitted.

    • A transportation system includes a track structure supporting one or more tracks along which cabins may travel. The track structure (2) contains the means of propulsion and extends the full length of travel of the cabins (1) and supports and guides the passenger carrying cabin(s). The means of propulsion is generated by connecting the passenger carrying cabin(s) to a rod (32) that successively engages a number of pairs of pinch rollers (40, 41) which are each driven by motors (42) located along the track (2). The pinch rollers are arranged such as to provide the necessary clamping force such that they propel the rod in the direction of travel without slip. The transportation system is suitable for installation both internal and external to building structures and enables cabins to be transported vertically, horizontally and around curved geometries.
