The patent element number has a unique identifier assigned thereto via the program instructions and is in a predetermined numerical sequence.

    • A multimodal sensor includes a microtensiometer for measuring the chemical potential of a sub-saturated liquid, a temperature sensor, and a water content sensor. The microtensiometer includes a sensor body comprising a first gas-impermeable layer, an opposing second gas-impermeable layer, and a porous membrane layer disposed therebetween. The sensor body defines an internal liquid reservoir. The membrane layer is fluidly connected with the liquid reservoir, and extends to an outside edge of the microtensiometer. The membrane layer defines a plurality of through pores providing an open path from the liquid reservoir to the outside edge of the microtensiometer. The pores have a maximum diameter of 3 millimeters. The microtensiometer further includes a sensor adapted to measure changes in pressure between the liquid reservoir and an outside environment. The temperature sensor is integrated onto the microtensiometer body, and the water content sensor is coupled to the microtensiometer body.

    • A wind turbine includes a hub sub-system comprising a main hub and a shaft adapted to rotate about an axis, and a plurality of turbine blades having a pitch angle. The blades are adapted to drive the rotation of the hub sub-system to a first speed. The wind turbine further includes a pitch drive sub-system including a driving element adapted to rotate about the axis at a second speed, and further adapted to control the pitch angle of the turbine blades in relation to a difference between the first speed and the second speed. A slip enhanced generator enables the hub sub-system to rotate at a different speed than the pitch drive sub-system. The difference in speed is governed by a slip function. The wind turbine further includes an active control system adapted to control the second speed of the driving element.

    • A thermal priority fuel cell power plant includes a cell stack assembly for generating an electrical power output. The cell stack assembly includes an anode, a cathode, and a waste heat recovery loop. The anode is configured to receive a fuel, the cathode is configured to receive an oxidizer, and the cell stack assembly is configured to generate the electrical power output by electrochemically reacting the anode fuel and the cathode oxidizer in the presence of a catalyst. The waste heat recovery loop includes a coolant inlet conduit and a coolant outlet conduit, and is configured to remove waste heat generated from the electrochemical reaction. A waste heat recovery loop is thermally coupled to the cell stack assembly for managing the waste heat of the cell stack assembly and for supplying thermal power to a thermal load demand. The waste heat recovery loop includes a heat exchanger in heat exchange relationship with the coolant outlet conduit and the thermal load demand. A controller is operatively associated with the cell stack assembly and the waste heat recovery loop. The controller controls the operation of the cell stack assembly by adjusting a fuel cell power plant parameter responsive to the thermal load demand. In one aspect, the fuel cell power plant parameter is reactant utilization. In another aspect, the fuel cell power plant parameter is a temperature for a thermal management system accumulator.

    • A refrigerant vapor compression system includes a compressor having a suction port and a discharge port, an air-cooled heat exchanger operatively coupled to the discharge port, a liquid-cooled heat exchanger operatively coupled to the air-cooled heat exchanger, a coolant pump operatively coupled to a liquid coolant inlet conduit of the liquid-cooled heat exchanger, an evaporator heat exchanger unit operatively coupled to the liquid-cooled heat exchanger and the suction port, a coolant pump operatively coupled to the liquid coolant inlet conduit for pumping a liquid coolant, and a controller operatively associated with the liquid coolant inlet conduit for controlling the flow of liquid coolant into the liquid-cooled heat exchanger. In one embodiment, the liquid-cooled heat exchanger comprises a low-profile enclosure defining an interior volume. The enclosure has a liquid coolant inlet port and a liquid coolant discharge port fluidly coupled to the interior volume, and a continuous refrigerant tube sealingly disposed within the enclosure. The refrigerant tube is fluidly isolated from and in heat exchange relationship with the interior volume in which the liquid coolant flows.
