摘要： A whipstock (10) has a flowchannel (41) therethrough to facilitate the rapid lowering of the whipstock through liquid in an oil well. A whipstock (10) has a guide surface and a sacrificial element (20) spaced from the guide surface. In use, the sacrificial surface prevents the starting mill damaging the guide surface during the formation of the initial opening in a casing. The undamaged guide surface can later be used for accurately guiding tubulars and tools to help ensure that lateral bores are correctly positioned.

摘要： A suspension system (10) for a bicycle or other vehicle or apparatus, the system including at least one telescoping strut comprising a first telescoping member (12) and a second telescoping member (14), the first and second telescoping members being telescopingly and coaxially engaged with each other so that the strut is compressible by relative movement of the telescoping members toward each other and expandable by relative movement away from each other. A piston (16) may be interconnected with the second telescoping member and slidably positioned within the first telescoping member. The piston separates a primary compression spring chamber into two gas chambers (30, 34) connected by an adjustable port, whereby compression or expansion of the strut creates a damping force that resists such relative movement of the telescoping members, resulting in the primary compression spring having a frequency-sensitive spring rate. The crack force, spring rate and other characteristics of the suspension system may be adjusted using a piston location adjuster to adjust the piston height, and/or a negative preload spring to apply a compressive preload force to the telescoping strut.

The dampening device may also be made in the form of an outwardly projecting skirt on the floating structure and consist of a plurality of channels (17), where a number of first passages (27, 28) extend in a substantially vertical direction and merge into a number of second passages (29) which extend in an at least substantially horizontal direction, and thereby force the water from a substantially vertical direction of motion, through the first passages (27, 28), into a horizontal direction of motion through the second passages (29) during a part of the passage through the dampener (12). A combination of the two dampeners, in that the dampener (12) is located immediately above the dampener (13) is also possible.

摘要： An electronic program schedule system having virtual channels which includes a receiver for receiving broadcast, satellite or cablecast television programs for a plurality of television channels and a tuner for tuning a television receiver to a selected one of the plurality of channels. A data processor receives and stores in a memory television program schedule information for a plurality of television programs to appear on the plurality of television channels. A user control apparatus, such as a remote controller, is utilized by a viewer to choose user control commands and transmit signals in response to the data processor which receives the signals in response to user control commands. A television receiver is used to display the television programs and virtual channel programming. A video display generator receives video control commands from the data processor and generates and displays a plurality of virtual channels, each virtual channel being accessible as a channel and associated with a service delivered on a subset of the channels.

摘要： Television programming information comprising an electronic programming guide is compressed by more than fifty percent, and decompressed in environments with only moderate processing power and storage space. The coding scheme of the present invention is based on Huffman coding of characters comprising the electronic programming guide and replacement character strings occuring in the data that have high savings values. A look-up table and binary tree are constructed from the Huffman codes for use in compressing and decompressing the electronic programming guide, and a set-top box for use in the decompression operation is provided.
