    • A seal (20) is fitted to an article of clothing such as a dress (110) and acts as an indicator of usage of the article (110). The seal (20) includes a strap (22) which wraps around a major portion of the article (110) and in particular across an outer surface of the article (11) and through an interior element of the article (110). The strap (22) includes first and second ends (24, 26) which are permanently fixed to one another by a fixing element (28). The seal (20) allows a customer to wear the item (110) for the purposes of trial only but presents a significant visual indicator intended to dissuade a customer from wearing the article as his/her own. The seal (20) can be cut or otherwise broken for its removal once the customer has decided to keep the article (110).

    • Apparatus for testing the solubility of a medical dosage form includes a chamber (12) for holding a solvent medium (18), in the preferred embodiment a bicarbonate based buffer system. The apparatus also includes a pH probe (66) which is connectable to a supply of carbon dioxide (32, 34),as well as to a supply of helium (40), the supplies being controlled by a control unit (50). The control unit (50) monitors changes in pH of the solvent medium (18) and, as appropriate, feeds pH increasing and/or p H reducing gas from the supplies(32, 34, 40) into the chamber (12). The control unit (50) is able to maintain a uniform pH during testing or to provide a dynamically adjustable pH during testing, for example to three or more different pH levels in order to test the performance of a drug carrier at different levels of acidity or alkalinity for example, mimicking the conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. The apparatus(20) and associated method are particularly suitable for testing and developing dosage forms for oral delivery of drugs.

    • Image generating apparatus includes a template (10) a high pressure fluid jet washer (12) provided with a suitable applicator and nozzle member (14) which can be controlled by a suitable operator (16). A fluid supply (18) feeds fluid into the washer (12). The template (10) has formed therein one or more apertures (20) which together form one or more images. The template (10) is placed on a surface to be cleaned. The operator (16) then applies the cleaning jet (24) which passes through the apertures (200 while being stopped by the solid parts of the template (10). The generated image is in effect a cleaned pattern in the treated surface. The image can be removed by cleaning the remainder of the surface or by waiting for the surface to become evenly dirty again. The surface which is cleaned is not damaged by this process.

    • A system (100) uses a pyroelectric membrane (122) and an ultrasound absorber (123) to measure the amount of ultrasonic energy received from a transmitter (105) through a sample (110). The thermal response of the pyroelectric membrane (122) is sensitive to ultrasound time-averaged intensity but is insensitive to the phase of the ultrasound. A waveform (200) shows rising (210), peak (220) and decaying (230) portions of a signal from the pyroelectric membrane (122) in response to on/off transitions of the transmitter (105). A system (300) uses a peak detector (333) to automatically turn the transmitter (105) on/off. A system (400) has background removal circuitry (444) to remove unwanted accelerometer-induced noise or electrical noise. A multi-element ultrasonic sensor (520) has cavities (555) so that a dummy sensor (521 b) can be used to compensate for unwanted accelerometer sensitivity of a sensor element (521 a). A sensor (620) has ultrasound absorbing (or reflective) regions (660) to compensate for unwanted accelerometer sensitivity. A system (900) has a low frequency path (909) sensitive to the pyroelectric effect, and a high frequency path (919) sensitive to the acoustic pressure amplitude, of a signal from a sensor (920). A sensor (1020) uses a pyroelectric material (1022) with poled regions (1099) separated by a non-poled region (1098).
