    • A radiant energy collecting apparatus including a fluid reservoir, a platform floating on said fluid reservoir, a drive structure for moving the platform on the reservoir, radiant energy collectors supported on the platform, reflectors for concentrating radiant energy on the radiant energy collectors, and means for selectively submerging the concentrating means beneath fluid from the reservoir for protection against inclement weather conditions. Fluid feed impellers are supported beneath the platform within the reservoir and communicate with ports through the platform for pumping fluid onto the platform and reflectors. Opposing fluid impellers are associated with each fluid feed impeller, the opposing impellers being operable with the feed impellers to force fluid in an opposing direction to the feed impellers, with deflectors being disposed between the feed impellers and the opposing impellers. A duct is associated with at least one impeller and is configured so as to direct fluid adjacent the at least one impeller in a vertical direction and direct fluid through its other end at least partially in a horizontal direction. Flotation devices secured to the platform support the platform when the reflectors are submerged beneath fluid from the reservoir, the buoyancy of the flotation devices per unit height increasing from bottom to top of the flotation devices. Alternatively or in addition, a low pressure is established beneath the platform to restrain the platform against the buoyant force on the platform.

    • A seismic shut off valve includes a cripple column (52, 66) responsive to seismic movement. A toggle spring (100) overlies the cripple column (52, 66). Latch pins (130) extend from the toggle spring (100) into a valve body to hold a poppet valve (166) in an open position. During an earthquake, the cripple column (52, 66) buckles causing the toggle spring (100) to bow upwardly under spring force exerted on the toggle spring (100) through the latch pins (136) from the poppet valve (166). The latch pins (136) release the poppet valve (166) which shifts to seal against a valve seat in the valve body. A ball joint (28) connecting the valve body and cripple column (52, 66) allows the cripple column (52, 66) to be vertically aligned despite the use of the valve on a non-vertical pipe.

    • The invention relates to a display unit, which can be selected alone or with others from a set of display units, for instance to provide an indication of a person's age on a birthday cake or the names of two persons on a wedding cake, or a greeting on an anniversary or a special day on another receiver surface.
      The display may be by candles, in a special holder, though other illuminants could be used, including ones electrically powered, preferably by battery. The embodiments of the invention described for use with candles can alternatively or additionally be used with electrical and/or electronic illuminants, which can either provide continuous illumination or be flashing.
      A holder for a candle or the like is taught which is stable than a candle; thus the holder can be wider but less high than the candle, and although preferably received and held in the surface or surface covering may alternatively simply rest on that surface or surface covering.
      In an alternative embodiment, intended with the unit to be hung generally vertically, the illuminant e.g. candle, recesses can be formed by holders projecting from one surface, positioned and shaped so that the candles can be upright, yet without the flame from one impinging upon the holder for another; we foresee that such a unit could have utility for hanging in a window or porch way, to indicate special occasions. The holders can be permanently attached to the base, such as a base board, or removably but non-rotatably received therein, typically in pre-formed openings.
