    • In an ad hoc network in which nodes communicate directly with each other or through another node, hole exchange messages are transmitted on an ongoing basis from one node to one or more other nodes. The spectrum hole message transmitted by a node provides a current view of the frequency spectrum as seen by the transmitting node, indicating where in the spectrum holes exist that are available for transmission. Hole exchange messages are transmitted by a node in response to either time triggers or event triggers. The former includes transmitting a hole exchange message periodically, pseudo-periodically, or according to a timer expiry. The latter includes events such as the node discovering the presence of a new node, receiving a request from another node for the node's current view of the spectrum, upon bearer selection during call setup between the node and another node, degradation of the link between the node and another node, and upon bearer release between the node and another node.

    • When a bomb that might be triggered by a ringing mobile terminal is suspected of being located within a target zone, the base stations whose coverage areas include a critical area that surrounds and encompasses that target zone are switched into a one-way calling mode that prevents the mobile terminals within that critical area from receiving incoming calls, but still allows users of those mobile terminals to place to place outgoing calls. The one-way calling mode is effected in response to a signal received by a base station from its associated MSC that instructs it to disable its paging function, thereby preventing the mobile terminal from receiving and responding to a signal that indicates that an incoming call is present, and thus prevents the base station from sending a signal to the mobile terminal that activates its ringing circuitry.

    • The number of Reverse Activity Bits (RABs) equal to "1" per frame is a Congestion Overload (CO) metric used to determine whether the reverse link in a wireless communications system is in a congestion overload state due to a reverse link RF overload. When the value of the CO metric exceeds a first predetermined threshold that is indicative of a congestion overload condition, the system enters a block state where all new connection requests are blocked. Once in the block state, if the value of the CO metric does not decrease but continues to increase and exceeds a second higher threshold, the system enters a mute state. In the mute state a predetermined large percentage of existing active calls are muted. Specifically, a message is sent downlink to specific Ats instructing them to reduce their transmission rates to zero but to still maintain their active connections.
