    • The invention provides a method for the preparation of iron or iron alloys from iron ore, the method comprising the steps of electrolysing dissolved iron ore in an electrolytic bath comprising at least one molten salt and optionally including dissolved metals, and separating the resulting iron metal or steel. The at least one molten salt is preferably chosen from salts of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and transition metals, and most preferably includes the oxides and halides of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals and the halides of iron. In particularly preferred embodiments of the invention, the method comprises either an electrowinning process or a liquid/liquid metal extraction process. By the use of the method of the invention, it is possible to achieve the extraction of iron or iron alloys from iron ores whilst avoiding the generation of any significant quantities of carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide.

    • The invention provides an apparatus and method for use in the cleaning of soiled substrates, the apparatus comprising: (a) housing means (1), having: (i) a first upper chamber having mounted therein a rotatably mounted cylindrical cage, and (ii) a second lower chamber (3) located beneath the cylindrical cage; (b) at least one recirculation means (4); (c) access means (10); (d) pumping means (8); (e) a multiplicity of delivery means (6), wherein the rotatably mounted cylindrical cage comprises a drum (2) comprising perforated side walls, wherein up to 60% of the surface area of the side walls comprises perforations, and the perforations comprise holes having a diameter of no greater than 25.0 mm. The method involves cleaning the soiled substrate by treatment of the moistened substrate with a formulation comprising solid particulate cleaning material and wash water, the method being carried out using the apparatus of the invention. The apparatus and method find particular application in the cleaning of textile fabrics.

    • The invention provides a kit and method for the assembly of a stairlift guide rail, the kit comprising a plurality of sections of guide rail wherein the sections have predetermined standard dimensions. The kit preferably includes a plurality of sections of straight guide rail and a plurality of sections of curved guide rail. When fitted together according to the method of the invention, the plurality of sections of guide rail facilitate the construction of a stairlift guide rail assembly and a stairlift assembly, such that an operative is able to complete the full assembly on site. The stairlift assembly preferably also comprises load bearing means, typically in the form of seating means, chassis means and driving means.
