    • A surgical positioning assembly for use with a surgical instrument which has an elongated shaft defining a longitudinal axis, for example a minimally invasive surgical instrument. The positioning assembly comprises: a base member comprising a skin contact surface, wherein the base member defines an opening for the elongated shaft; a rotating assembly configured to rotate relative to the base member about a rotation point located below the skin contact surface wherein the rotating assembly defines an opening for the elongated shaft; and a locking mechanism for locking the position of the positioning assembly on the elongated shaft and for locking the orientation of the rotating assembly relative to the base member. In use, the elongated shaft of the surgical instrument will exert stress on the abdominal wall as the shaft is moved relative to abdominal wall. It has been found that the stress on the abdominal wall is reduced if the rotation point is below the skin of the patent. As a further benefit the reduced stress allows easier movement of the surgical instrument.

    • An angular adjustment mechanism for a surgical instrument is described. The mechanism comprises an adjustment member (102) configured for rotation about a longitudinal axis (122), the adjustment member comprising a plurality of pairs of facets (134) arranged about the longitudinal axis. Each of the plurality of pairs of facets defines a respective angled axis (148B,148C) at an angle (150B,150C) relative to the longitudinal axis. A pivoting member (104) is arranged to pivot about a pivot axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and comprises a recess (128) for receiving the adjustment member and engaging one pair of the plurality of pairs of facets. This provides an angular adjustment mechanism in which facets on the outside of the adjustment member engage corresponding surfaces in a recess on a pivoting member. The use of facets provides a secure connection while allowing a greater degree of angular adjustment and providing a further benefit of simple operation.

The trocar tip with this construction is simple to manufacture and effective at enlarging an incision.

    • A solar cell which remains operative when subject to an applied tensile load is described. The solar cell comprises: a tensile layer; a first photovoltaic structure; and first and second electrodes, each connected to a different surface of the first photovoltaic structure. The tensile layer enables a tensile load to be carried and the photovoltaic structure can maintain its properties when subject to strain. The photovoltaic cell preferably comprises a bulk heterojunction. A method of manufacturing a bulk heterojunction for use in a photovoltaic structure is also described. The method comprises depositing an electron transport layer on an electrode surface using solution deposition; and depositing a hole transport layer on the electron transport layer using solution deposition. It has been found that manufacture of the layers in this way allows spontaneous creation of a bulk heterojunction between the electron transport layer and the hole transport layer. An apparatus for improved cooling of a solar cell in use, thereby improving its efficiency is also described. The apparatus comprises: a supporting structure; a flexible container comprising a first flexible sheet forming an upper surface and a second flexible sheet forming a lower surface, wherein the flexible container is attached to the supporting structure so that the second sheet is at least partially in tension; at least one flexible solar cell at least partially covering the upper surface of the flexible container; an inlet for supplying fluid into the container; and an outlet for removing fluid from the container.

The third container can provide instruments that may be used at more than one point in the procedure, to avoid needing to provide multiple instruments in different containers and to simplify inventory. The third container may also provide instruments used for determining the required size of the instruments in the first and second containers.

    • A handle (3) for a surgical instrument, and in particular a handle for use with keyhole surgery, endoscopic and laparoscopic instruments is disclosed. In one embodiment, the present invention provides a handle for a surgical instrument comprising one part with a pivoting or articulated end portion (4b), and a means for indexing the pivoting movement of the end portion. The indexing means allows adjustment of the angle of the end portion together with improved control and tactile feedback to the user. In another aspect, the present invention provides a handle for a surgical instrument comprising one part with a pivoting or articulated end portion, and a means for locking the movement of the end portion. The locking means can be moved between locked and unlocked positions. The end portion can be pivoted or articulated to a desired angle and the locking means moved to a position to prevent movement of the end portion holding it at the desired angle. This improves control and tactile feedback to the user.
