    • 1,066,022. Detecting explosions photoelectrically. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Dec. 5, 1962 [March 8, 1962], No. 46007/62. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G2] . An optical shutter comprises a pair of spaced apart light-transmitting means, further means for maintaining the light-transmitting means in such relationship and forming therewith a normally light-transmitting chamber, an opaquing medium operatively associated with the chamber, and means for effecting dispersal of the opaquing medium throughout the chamber. The shutter is adapted to become opaque within about 200 microseconds of initiation and may be incorporated in goggles to protect personnel against the flash of an atomic bomb or may be used as a fast shutter for a camera. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, two rectangular transparent plastic plates 11 and 12 are clamped to a spacer 13 extending round three sides of the plates and to a member 19 extending along the fourth side, thus forming an airtight chamber 15 which may or may not be evacuated. The member 19 is provided with a groove extending substantially along its length and forming a reservoir containing an opaquing material 16 and an explosive charge 17. The opaquing material may be a colloidal suspension of graphite in an isopropyl alcohol or normal hexyl alcohol carrier. In operation a signal indicating an intense flash may be derived from a solid state photo-electric device and used to detonate the explosive which projects the opaquing material through the barrier 27 into the chamber 15.
