    • An alternating current induction motor having a multitapped RUN winding and including a controller which automatically determines an instant tap selection in response to changes in applied a.c. electric power voltage level appearing immediately at the motor terminals. A measure of instant level of the motor terminal voltage is utilized to automatically reselect the RUN winding tap selection in order to maintain a near constant level of magnetic excitation in the stator field irrespective of immediate changes or variations in the available motor terminal voltage. Electric lawn mowers, power tool motors and other heavily loaded motors which may normally be operated at the end of various lengths of especially long and lossy extension cords or the like may advantageously utilize my control technique to maintain operation with an about normal and constant level of power, independent from usual performance degrading voltage drop losses commonly encountered in the extension cord. Appliances which use induction motors, such as air conditioners and refrigerators, may run with better electrical efficiency in presence of poor line voltage regulation due to inadequate wiring, or intentional brown-out conditions, while maintaining nearly constant operational performance.

    • Ignition foiling device which serves to interfere with the efficient operation of a vehicle ignition system after a brief, predetermined period of time has elapsed subsequent to the unauthorized start-up of the vehicle engine. The foiling device thereby serves to thwart the theft, or other confiscative act directed at a protected vehicle, through first allowing the vehicle engine to start-up in an apparently normal manner and operate for a brief period of time, thereby allowing the illicit operator to drive the vehicle into an attention getting location. The ignition system then becomes irregularly interrupted in such a way that the illusion of misfiring and performance malfunction of the engine is created which serves to discourage the illicit operator from continuing with the attempted theft. The invention couples with the usual components comprising a spark ignition vehicle engine and, through a key or secret switch, it can be defeated by a legitimate operator while an unlawful operator will most likely be unable to overcome the invention's crippling effect on the vehicle's operation.

    • A continuous, momently constant amplitude signal is received through a lossy transmission medium and adapted to produce a distinct step-like series of pulse repetition rates therefrom which are proportional to the received signal amplitude. The relatively constant received signal is modulated into a sequence of distinctly separate amplitude steps which are level detected and adapted to produce a cyclic pulse rate proportional to the average value of the received signal. The cyclic pulse rate is employed directly to give aural or visual indication. Alternatively the cyclic pulse rate is adapted to provide a binary format signal for cooperation with a computer data bus or the like.

    • An energy conserving device which reduces excess level of alternating current power fed to RUN windings of an a.c. electric induction motor whenever the motor is less than fully loaded. A voltage dropping reactor coupled between an a.c. power source and the motor produces about 10-30% reduction in applied motor terminal voltage under reduced motor load running conditions, while a semiconductor switch acts to instantly shunt out the voltage dropping effect of the reactor and couple an increased portion, or full level of a.c. terminal voltage to the motor whenever the motor load increases. Changes in instantaneous levels of motor loading may be determined by changes in motor speed slip, determined from the motor's operating power factor, or preprogrammed. As a result of less a.c. power being applied to the motor under all but full-load conditions, a considerable reduction in eddy current and winding resistance losses is obtained which may save 20% or more in electrical energy usage in refrigerators, air conditioners, and other major appliances and as a result considerably lessen power demand from utility lines.

    • A.c. line operated controller which provides solid-state switching of a.c. power flow, together with producing a supplementary source of low d.c. power for operation ancillary circuits. Operation is obtained through electrical connection that is in series with only one side of the a.c. power circuit. Device utilizes a thyristor for a.c. power switch control. A small residual potential which is devised to appear across the ON-state thyristor is rectified to produce the low d.c. power level. When the thyristor is OFF, the line voltage potential across the thyristor is reduced and rectified to produce the low d.c. power level. Turning the thyristor OFF is attained by current starving of the thyristor gate electrode by a gate shunting semiconductor switch. Device is shown to be utilized in "two terminal" apparatus producing time delayed switching of a light, as a controller for producing the illusion of a flickering flame from an ordinary light bulb, as a light flasher, and as a "touch-controlled" a.c. power switch for lighting.

    • Electric power consumed by an a.c. induction motor is measured and sensed changes in power factor are used to modulate the combined magnetic flux produced in the motor field by two sets of RUN windings. A main RUN winding set, which normally couples fully with the a.c. power, is engineered to have sufficient ampere-turns to produce just enough magnetic flux to operate the motor with a light load and maintain a moderately high power factor. Motor driven load increases are determined by sensing a corresponding increase in the power factor of the main RUN winding set, whereupon power flow to a secondary RUN winding is proportionately increased. Considerable energy savings occurs when the motor drives a fluctuating load due to reduced magnetic field excitation under all but full load conditions, with the result that energy ordinarily wasted by eddy currents, copper losses, and poor power factor operation is considerably lessened. Other possible losses due to harmonic distortion of the a.c. power waveform brought about by the phase-delayed thyristor control of the second run winding power are mostly swamped out and masked by the parallel, always-on major power draw by the main run winding. A motor speed-sensitive switch or relay may divert current around the thyristor and fully excite the second run winding during motor start-up, thereby producing full available motor torque during start-up while negating any electrical stress on the control thyristor.

    • A frequency shift responsive metal detector having a sense oscillator coupled with an inducer loop. When the inducer nears a metal object, the effective inductance is changed which correspondingly shifts the natural frequency of the sense oscillator. The sense oscillator couples with a frequency shift detector. The detector produces a d.c. feedback signal which is proportional to the sense oscillator shift and acts therewith to re-establish the oscillator to it's original natural frequency by way of a voltage controlled reactance. The detector also produces a d.c. output that serves to drive an audio frequency rate voltage controlled oscillator wherein the pitch, or resultant frequency therefrom produced is proportional to the effect of the metal object on the inducer loop. A d.c. signal from the detector also serves to drive a visual indicator, such as a meter. The change in the loop inductance may be either positive or negative, resulting in a unique indication distinction between diamagnetic materials, and those which are ferromagnetic or paramagnetic. The use of a dual channel, stereo-like apparatus also provides the operator with directivity, which may be coupled with an enhancement gate signal which alternates the stereo-response back and forth between the earphones of a stereo-headset, thereby improving operator acuity.
