    • 614,290. Making finned and compound tubing, steam generators, and bellows. WARREN WEBSTER & CO. July 11, 1946, No. 20755. Convention date, July 18, 1945. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Corrugating ; altering physical &c. structure.- Tubes are expanded by the solidification of a filling liquid which expands on freezing. Fins 12 are secured to a tube 11 by filling the tube with water &c., plugging the ends by plug clamps 15, 16 of non- metal construction and freezing the liquid. To regulate the amount of expansion the liquid space in the interior of the tube may be reduced by a cylindrical or tapered rod 25 positioned by spacers 26. The tube may be annealed before freezing and hardened by the expansion. A tube may be encased within another tube or tubes may be expanded into headers of boilers &c., Fig. 9 (not shown), or a tube may be corrugated in dies of increasing depth by the expansion for the manufacture of bellows, Fig. 8, (not shown). Tubes may be passed through a refrigerating bath and a thawing and cleansing bath or the refrigerant may be circulated through a member placed within the tube, Fig. 10 (not shown). The fins 12 may carry flanges 13 which become bowed, Fig. 5, during the expansion. Metal alloys such as antimony alloys and chemicals which expand on solidification may be used.

    • 14,280. Warren, Webster, & Co., and Montreuil, F. H. June 13. Heating by circulation of fluids.-Relates to steam heating sy-tems in which steam is also supplied from the boiler to cookers, pumps, &c. and especially to the pump for withdrawing air and water from the system, and consists in providing means whereby the steam supply to the heating system is shut off when the pressure falls too low to operate the air and water pump. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement, the radiators 4, pump 8, and cooker 25 being connected in parallel to the steam main 2. The steam is shut off automatically from the radiators 4 when the pressure falls below that necessary to operate the pump 8 by a valve 10, which is controlled by the pressure in the main 2 acting on a diaphragm 16. The connexions of the pump and cooker to the main are arranged on the boiler side of the valve 10. The door 28 of the furnace is also controlled by a diaphragm 30 operated by steam taken from the radiator side of the valve 10.
