The breaker plate 32 of an automatic advance and retard mechanism 33 is moved by a collar 27 on a throttle operating shaft 25 to a retarded position, e. g. 5‹ after T. D. C. when the foot pedal 41 is released. When the pedal is depressed the plate 32 first follows up the collar 27 to advance the spark, e.g. to 8‹ to 12‹ before T. D. C., and thereby increase the idling speed before the throttle valve, which is operated through lost motion by a collar 26 on shaft 25, is opened. After collar 26 contacts collar 24 on the throttle operating lever to open the throttle valve, the collar 27 frees the breaker plate for automatic control by the usual vacuum and centrifugal mechanisms. The pedal 41 is returned to its release position by a spring 61 which is stronger than a spring urging plate 32 in the advance direction.
