    • PURPOSE: To uniformly apply paste to both sides of a grid to a specified thickness without distortion and clogging of the grid by specifying a gap of orifice plates of a paste hopper and a lower paste supply box, and a gap of a slot of the orifice plate and a backup roller. CONSTITUTION: A gap between orifice plates forming a battery grid path of each of a paste hopper 14 and a lower paste supply box 12 is set to at least 0.203mm larger than the thickness of a grid, and paste supplied from a slot of each orifice plate with a hopper supply roller 52 and a backup roller 150 is applied to both sides of the grid. The minimum gap of the rear edge of the slot of the a lower orifice plate and the circumferential surface of the backup roller 150 is set to 0.000-0.76mm, and a preliminary space for paste is formed between the front edge and the roller 150, and paste is uniformly applied to the both sides of the grid without the generation of distortion and clogging.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuously cast battery positive electrode grid significantly improved in corrosion resistance and extremely small in growth in use by forming it by continuous casting of molten lead as part of a web, by imparting a generally uniform thickness to it, by providing it with mutually connected plural wires having voids among them and by reducing its thickness to a specific ratio or less by cold working. SOLUTION: The thickness of this grid is reduced to 2:1 or less by cold working and after age hardening for 30 days, enhanced corrosion resistance and tensile strength are imparted to it. The positive and negative electrode grids each are formed with plural webs having a long blank by continuous casting, a mold composition is removed by washing the webs, and the thicknesses of the webs are reduced by passing the webs through a nip comprising one or plural pairs of compressive rollers. The thicknesses of the webs are normally reduced and the webs are washed within 24 hours after the continuous casting. After the reduction of the thicknesses is completed, paste is applied to the webs, and the webs are cut into wet applied grids and dried.
