    • 549,107. Boring-machines. JOHNSON, G. W., (Sellers & Co., Inc., W.). March 10, 1941, No. 3219. [Class 83 (iii)] A boring mill or other machine tool has a motor driving a spindle through change speed gearing including shiftable gear units operated by a cam member which controls a motor switch so as to reduce the motor speed during the shifting of one or more of said units. A horizontal boring mill 10 has a head 11 fitted with a gear box 12 driven from a motor 13 and arranged to drive a main spindle 15 connected by gears 18, 25 to an auxiliary spindle 16. The gear 18 is driven by a gear train including sliding members 21, 22 controlled by a cam 26, Fig. 3, operated from a handle 14 through shaft 29 and bevel gearing 30. The handle positions M1 ... M4 correspond to various speeds for the main spindle and positions A1 ... A4 corresponding to speeds of the auxiliary spindle. The shaft 29 carries a cam 33 having a rise for each position of the handle, the cam coacting with a roller 37 on a switchoperating lever 38 to close a switch 31 when the roller is on a rise of the cam during a change of speed. This opens a normally closed switch 40 and interrupts current supply to the motor during the gear change. Another cam 34 on the shaft 29 actuates a switch 32, Fig. 7, controlling a reversing switch 42 so that when the control handle is in an " auxiliary " spindle position the motor runs in the opposite direction from that when the main spindle is being driven so that both spindles are always driven in the same operative direction. In a modification instead of switching off the motor during the speed changes, the motor is slowed down by introducing a resistance into its circuit.
