    • A hydraulic control valve for a continuously-variable-ratio transmission (CVT), particularly one of the toroidal race rolling traction type. The transmission includes hydraulically-operated clutches (25,26) whose capacity to transmit torque varies with the operating pressure supplied to them. The transmitted ratio is related to the position of a hydraulic ram (35), which when it overshoots its normal stroke creates a pressure rise upstream of it in the circuit. This pressure rise first resists further overshoot, and then causes a reduction in the clutch operating pressure. Ram position is controlled by valve means (56,57) which are located downstream of the ram, and which are themselves sensitive (via 58) to feedback from upstream circuit pressure: when that pressure rises, the valve means open so as to depress the downstream circuit pressure by which the clutches are operated (via 68). In the illustrated embodiment of the invention a double-acting ram is shown, controlled by a circuit comprising two parallel hydraulic lines (42,54: 43,55) associated respectively with the opposite ends (36,37) of the ram, each line being controlled by a separate downstream control valve. The pressure feedback to the control valves and the operating pressure for the clutches are taken from cross-connections (48,60) between the two lines, so that each such pressure always has the higher of the values existing in the two lines at each end of the cross-connection.

    • The present invention concerns a transmission arrangement particularly suited for use with a motor vehicle which has left and right hand transmissions 200 L , 200 R . A left hand variator 204 L , 404 L comprises a left hand input race 222 L driveable from a transmission input 220, 520, 620 and a left hand output race 226 L , 426 L , 626 L . A set of left hand variator rollers 224 L is arranged to transmit drive between the left hand input race and the left hand output race. The left hand variator rollers are moveable to permit continuous change in the ratio of rotary speed of the left hand input are to that of the left hand output race. A left hand epicyclic unit 210 L has two left hand epicyclic inputs 226 L , 234 driveable respectively along with the left hand input race and the left hand output race, and a left hand epicyclic out 234 which is arranged to drive a left hand transmission output 240 L , 440 L , 640 L . A right hand transmission is formed in similar manner. In accordance with an aspect of the invention, the left and right hand epicyclic units are both frictional devices in which epicyclic planets 234 are formed as rollers, and more specifically as balls, which run upon annular surfaces of a pair of epicyclic elements and which are carried in planet carriers. The rollers of the left hand variator are moveable independently of the rollers of the right hand variator, so that the speeds of the left and right hand transmission outputs are independently variable.

A traction pressure related to the reaction pressure is applied to an actuator (72, 100) which creates the traction load. The hydraulics also include a working chaniber (C2, C4, CH1, CH2, CH3) which is selectively connectable to and disconnectable from either (or both) of (i) the reaction pressure and (ii) the traction pressure, the traction force being dependent upon pressure in the working chamber.
