    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide certain advantages in which the fellow eye is working simultaneously with the tasted eye looking at an unobstructed visual target in a lane by generating an image internally capable of moving and manipulating with relative ease.SOLUTION: There are provided an apparatus and a method for measuring refractive characteristics of human eyes comprising an objective refraction measuring device for measuring refraction in at least one eye, an objective refraction measuring system 10 having a proximal end and a distal end and suitable for looking in the proximal end and seeing out the distal end, and an open field visual target 50. A viewing lane 20 is provided between eyes 42, 44 and the open field visual target 50. The viewing lane has sufficient length to allow for focusing the eye at infinity and for natural accommodation at true distance targets near distances such as reading distances. The objective refraction measuring device can be positioned in the viewing lane to measure the eye while the eye is focused on the open field visual target.
