    • Sampler apparatus and method are provided and include both closed and open tube samplers, and selector valve operable to select therebetween for sample supply to automated sample analysis apparatus. A shear valve divides the samples into separate sample quantities for independent sample quantity analysis by multi-channel sample analysis apparatus. A pressure equilibration chamber prevents vacuum build-up in the closed tube sampler to insure the supply of consistent sample quantities therefrom. A source of a pressurized rinse solution is provided; and is operatively connected to the sampler apparatus in such manner as to insure the particularly thorough rinsing and cleansing of all relevant sampler components to remove sample residue therefrom between sampling operations, thereby reducing sample carryover to levels below those of clinical significance.

    • A continuous flow method and apparatus in which a fluid stream comprising segments of liquids (R 1 + S; R 2 ; B) separated by intervening segments of immiscible fluid (A 1 : A' 2 ; A" 2 ) eg gas, is flowed through a conduit (100). The conduit has three sequential sections (102,104,106). As the stream passes from the first (102) into the second (104) section, some of the liquid segments (R 1 + S; R 2 ) are caused to combine whereas others (R 1 + S + R 2 ; B) are maintained separate. In the third section (106), the combined segments (R 1 + S + R 2 ) are thoroughly mixed. The technique allows the mixing of selected liquid segments. within the fluid stream, whilst maintaining separation of other segments, so permitting two-stage reactions to be performed without inter-sample carryover.
