    • A synthetic lubricating oil is obtained by polymerizing a C6-C14 straight chain alpha olefin at 0-50 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst system formed from an aluminium alkyl sesquichloride, the alkyl group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, titanium tetrachloride and a tertiary amine oxide or aromatic amine oxide, the proportions of said constituents being such that the atomic ratio of Al : Ti is 0.5 to 2.5 : 1 and the atomic ratio of O: Al is 0.2 to 0.6 : 1. The reaction may take place in presence of a saturated hydrocarbon or a halohydrocarbon as solvent. Specified solvents include pentane, hexane octane decanes and dimethylcyclohexane, halobenzenes having 1 or 2 halogen atoms which may be chlorine or fluorine or both, trihaloethanes, tetrahaloethanes, trihaloethylenes and tetrahaloethylenes. In the absence of a solvent the olefin to titanium tetrachloride weight ratio is preferably above 100 : 1. The term "tertiary amine" refers to amines in which the nitrogen is attached to three different carbon atoms, two or three of which may be in the same molecule, e.g. trimethyl and triethylamines, triphenylamine, N-methylpiperidine and quinuclidine. The term aromatic amine refers to heterocyclic aromatic compounds, wherein the nitrogen is attached to two carbon atoms, e.g. pyridine, a , b , or g -picolines, quinoline, quinaldine, lepidine and acridine. The product is distilled to recover material boiling above 650 DEG F. which may be hydrogenated at 150-250 DEG C. and a hydrogen pressure of 1000-2500 p.s.i.g. using Raney nickel.ALSO:Catalysts, used in the polymerization of C6-C14 straight chain olefins to prepare lubricating oils, are formed from an aluminium alkyl sesquichloride, titanium tetrachloride and a tertiary amine oxide or aromatic amine oxide the proportions of these constitutes being such that the atomic ratio of Al : Ti is 0.5 \sS 2.5 : 1 and the atomic ratio of O : Al is 0.2 to 0.6 : 1. Examples, of amine oxides are trimethyl and triethyl amines, triphenylamine, N-methylpiperidine, quinuclidine pyridine, a , b or g picolines, quinoline, quinaldine, lepidine and acridine.
