    • A cabinet system for storing a variety of magnetic and optical storage elements includes a cabinet frame and a plurality of drawers. The overall cabinet system comprises two or more individual units or levels which can be stacked together. In one embodiment, the upper level has two layers with two drawer chambers at each layer for holding drawers for audio cassette tapes, the middle level has two layers with two drawer chambers at each layer for holding drawers for video cassette tapes, and the lower level has one layer with two drawer chambers for holding drawers for compact discs. A level for storing computer floppy discs can be further provided, either between the audio cassette level and the video cassette level or elsewhere. The drawers at different levels are specially designed for storing a special kind of magnetic or optical storage elements respectively. The cabinet system of the present invention can be easily manufactured and has an attractive appearance.

    • An apparatus for use in space environments to control the flow of a propellant to a thruster at a low mass flow rate comprises an insulated body having a cavity therein defining a vaporizing chamber, a porous medium having a low liquid permeability disposed in the chamber, a conduit means for feeding a propellant liquid into the chamber and exhausting a propellant vapor from the vaporizing chamber, and a heating means communicating with the medium within the chamber for controllable heating of the liquid propellant in the chamber creating a variable liquid/vapor transition zone within the medium. The transition zone is responsive to the heating means to control the mass flow rate of propellant through the vaporizing chamber. As the liquid/vapor transition zone is moved upstream by increasing the heater output, and thus increasing the volume of vapor within the porous medium, mass flow through the porous medium is decreased. Conversely, movement of the liquid/vapor transition zone downstream through the medium by decreasing the heater output, and thus exposing more of the porous medium volume to liquid, increases the mass flow rate.

    • A system for containing oil or other contaminants which have leaked from an oil tanker or similar structure is disclosed. A series of flotation members are connected end to end and stored around the perimeter of the tanker. A membrane is folded and packed into a recess in each member and held between the member and the tanker. The members are held against the sides of the tanker by a movable stay. In case of an oil leak, a triggering mechanism sequentially moves the stays to release the flotation members, which drop off the tanker into the water. One edge of the membrane is attached to the members while the opposite edge of the membrane is free. The free edge of the membrane falls from the members so that the membrane forms a curtain in the water. Each flotation member is further connected to adjacent members by a flexible jacket and adjacent edges of each membrane are connected to each other. In this manner a continuous curtain surrounds the tanker to prevent passage of all or most of the spilled oil.

    • An apparatus and process for the transfer of heat from a hot exhaust fluid stream as, for example, produced by a combustion process, into an incoming air stream, to heat the incoming air stream close to the temperature of the exhaust stream. Such high heat transfer efficiency has heretofore not been practiced due to the fact that these exhaust streams frequently contain particulate, water vapor and other condensable vapors. The particulate in the gas fouls high performance heat exchangers and if the temperature of the gas is reduced below its dewpoint, the condensed moisture exacerbates the fouling problem and introduces a corrosion problem of its own. The apparatus of the invention includes a moving granular bed heat exchanger that can cool the exhaust gas to provide enough energy to heat the incoming air close to the temperature of the exhaust gas. Particulate in the hot exhaust fluid stream is filtered in the granular bed. The apparatus can also include means for the removal of condensed water vapor and other vapors should the exhaust gas be cooled below the dewpoint to provide increased heat transfer. The invention can be used with, for example, boilers, furnaces, dryers and the like, to preheat an incoming air stream.

    • A dryer in which fabrics are dryed quickly and at low temperature by subjecting them to microwave energy in an atmosphere of reduced pressure. The microwave energy elevates the temperature of the water within the fabric to its boiling point, which is quite low because of the reduced pressure, and the water vapor which is released from the fabric is condensed external to the microwave field at the same reduced pressure. In one embodiment the dryer is formed as a clothes dryer wherein the drying chamber is a spherical metallic vacuum vessel; the microwave energy is supplied by a solid state microwave array within the drying chamber; water vapor is condensed by a spray condenser external to the drying chamber; and reduced pressure is obtained by a water jet exhauster, which functions in part as a condenser. Drying time is accelerated by warming the lower surface of the drying chamber with hot water, and a jet of air fluffs the fabric after drying.
