    • An implantable photoplethysmographic sensor for animals such as small rodents, namely rats and mice is provided. This involves making photoplethysmographic measurements on, or more precisely through, the head of the subject specifically, but also subcutaneously by applying sensors directly to the skull of the animal. Not only does the skull provide a location where blood flow will always be available, it also provides a platform for adhering sensor pads such that noise that results from motion of the animal is minimized. The reason is that when sensors are glued to the skull, they cannot move relative to the bone, but more importantly to the brain tissue underneath, assuming that the brain does not "slosh around" while the animal is moving.

The noninvasive photoplethysmographic sensor platform may be a collar which provides an easily affixed, adjustable attachment mechanism that encircles the animal, such as the neck. The neck of the animal provides several particular advantages as a sensor mounting platform for photoplethysmographic sensors. For pulse oximetry, the neck location will provide significant blood flow under all conditions. For small mammals, such as rats and mice, transmittance pulse oximetry through the neck of the subject remains possible. The neck mounted collar also offers inherent bite resistance to the sensor platform.
