    • An LED strobe notification device and method for operating an LED strobe notification device is provided. The LED strobe notification device is configured to generate an output at two or more candela settings and is configured to generate the output at the two or more candela settings having a human-perceived pulse duration with a fixed width. The LED strobe device includes: an LED strobe element; and an LED controller in communication with the LED strobe element with the LED controller configured to: receive a candela selection for the LED strobe element, the candela selection selected from the two or more candela settings; receive a command to activate the LED strobe element of the LED strobe notification device; and in response to receiving the command, control the LED strobe element in order to generate the output from the LED strobe element having the human-perceived pulse duration with the fixed width.

    • A method and system for configuring initiating devices in a fire alarm system is provided. Groupings of the initiating devices in the fire alarm system are determined entirely automatically (or partially automatically). For example, the fire alarm control panel may communicate with the initiating devices to receive grouping information from the initiating device (which may be input at the initiating device), and determine the grouping based on the communication. As another example, the fire alarm control panel may communicate with the initiating devices in order to determine some aspect of the fire alarm system (such as the wiring), and automatically determine the grouping based on the communication. Moreover, labels for the initiating devices in the fire alarm system may be generated entirely automatically (or partially automatically). Further, reporting of the alarm events by the fire alarm control panel may be based on grouping. For example, the fire alarm control panel may determine the grouping information for the one or more initiating devices that sent an alarm communication, organize presentation of the indication of the alarm event based on the determined grouping information, and present, on an output device, the organized presentation of the indication of the fire alarm event.

    • A VOX interface is provided that interfaces with at least two communication paths to two separate devices. One communication path may be to a first electronic device, such as a central monitoring station remote from the VOX interface, and another communication path may be to one or more remote devices, such as to one or more patient devices remote from the VOX interface. The VOX interface may determine which of the communication paths is sending a signal (such as an audio signal), and configure the VOX interface (via one or more switches) to pass the signal through. Specifically, the VOX interface may sense signals indicating the presence of audio from a central station audio bus and the patient station bus, may do some background noise filtering on the signals, and may pass these filtered values through a differentiator circuit to determine which bus presented the audio. Depending on which bus presented the audio, one or more switches (such as a relay) may be configured so that the audio may be passed through.

The system contains at least one system controller (104) communicating with at least one addressable device on at least one communications channel or network. Preset address elements configured in a mating connector arrangement (113) or as an adhesive label (116 b) provide unique addresses to each of the addressable devices. The preset address elements may use digital or analog cicuit techniques to encode unique addresses that are subsequently read and stored by the addressable devices. When installed, the preset address elements also provide visual indications of the device addresses.

    • A backup communication system (BCS) is provided as part of a networked (TCP/IP) hospital communication system. The BCS is coupled to a power line used to provide power to a PoE switch. When the TCP/IP communications are interrupted, BCS is operable to receive patient call signals from a plurality of patient room terminals over a secondary communication mode of the power line, and to transmit those call signals to a nurses station. The call signals can be generated by coupling a pulse-coded AC signal onto the PoE wires, or by sending voltage coded data in one direction and current-coded data in the other direction. Different signals or signal levels can be used to distinguish, for example, between a normal patient call, a patient emergency call, and a code call. In this way, basic communications can be achieved when the normal TCP/IP communications mode is unavailable.
