    • A system and method for maintaining positions of bones fixed or approximated relative to each other is provided that is ideal for minimizing interference with surrounding viscera in spinal column procedures, although other good application therefor are also disclosed. In the preferred form, a cable anchoring apparatus in the form of a screw member (26) having an elongate shank (28) that is threaded for substantially the full length thereof is employed. An internal driver surface (96) is provided so that the size of the proximate end (32) of the shank (28) can be minimized or maintained consistently sized with respect to the remainder of the shank (28) with no enlarged driver head formed thereat. This allows the amount of bone material that is removed from full insertion of the screw anchor 26 to be minimized, i.e. no countersinking for an enlarged driver head is necessary, thus improving holding power of the cable anchor herein. Further, the full threading of the shank (28) for substantially its entire length enables the screw member (26) to be fully sunk into the bone so that no portions thereof, such as an enlarged screw head, project into the surrounding body cavity in which the bone is located. In the spinal column application, a criss-cross cable pattern (63) is disclosed to better resist torsional forces and keep any decompression devices (66) in place in the gap between adjacent vertebrae.

    • Bone plate and bone screw lock systems are provided for use in surgical implants. In a preferred form, the bone plate or other implantable member defines a bore for receiving a bone screw and a recess in communication with the bore. A screw lock operates in the bore at the recess to engage and lock the bone screw against unintentional movement. The preferred screw lock is shifted about the screw between an unlocked position to allow manipulation of the screw and a locked position in which the screw lock grips the head of the screw to prevent movement of the screw. The screw lock preferably has a c-shaped collar configuration with opposing ends and a camming engagement with the plate or other member in the recess. Upon rotation of the screw lock, the camming engagement causes the ends of the collar to either shift toward one another in which the collar compresses about the screw to lock the screw or away from another to unlock the screw head.
