摘要： A prosthetic part (10) for use as an orthopedic implant has a base member defining an outer surface (20) for implantation adjacent a prepared bone surface (21). The outer surface (20) includes a recessed area (16) having a predetermined shape and depth. A first rigid plate (22) having this predetermined shape and having a plurality of elongated slots (26) formed therein is fixedly attached within the recessed area (16) of the base member. A second rigid plate (24) also having the same predetermined shape as the recess and also having a plurality of elongated slots (28) formed therein is attached to the first rigid plate. The elongated slots (28) of the second plate (24) are angularly offset with respect to the elongated slots (26) in the first plate to produce a controlled porosity. The thicknesses of the first and second plates are predetermined so that the outer surface (18) of the second plate is substantially continuous with the non-recessed outer surface (20) of the base member (10).

摘要： A prosthetic nucleus for a vertebral disc is made of a hydrogel material. The hydrogel prosthetic nucleus has a shape generally conforming to the natural nucleus pulposus. The hydrogel has a water content of at least 30 % and has a compressive strength of 4MNm-2 or greater. When the hydrogel material is dehydrated, it has a dimension of less than half of that of the hydrated hydrogel nucleus. The prosthetic nucleus may be formed of two or more pieces of hydrogel material which pieces, when combined, have a shape generally conforming to the natural nucleus. The prosthetic nucleus for implantation in the disc space after removal of a damaged or degenerated nucleus may also be formed from a multiplicity of hydrogel beads having a water content of at least 30 %. The beads are covered by a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane has porosity less than the size of the beads to thereby retain the beads therein but permit fluids to flow in and out of the prosthetic nucleus.

摘要： A multi-piece trial femoral component kit is used for preparing and sizing a femoral cavity prior to implantation of a prosthetic femoral component. The trial component kit has at least three trial stem portions (12) of differing size and at least three trial body portions (14) of different size. The stem and body portions include mating male (28) and female (30) elements which allow the stem portions to be securely coupled to the body portions. In order to ensure that the so-coupled stem and body portions from a trial femoral component having a size equal to an available orthopedic femoral implant, the male and female elements include a key (32) and keyway (34) which are sized so that only trial stem and body portions resulting in an available femoral implant can be combined and used as a trial femoral component.

摘要： Disclosed is a catheter and moveable needle system (15', 15") which places one or more fiber optic elements (23', 23") and thermo-measuring devices (24) through a body passageway wall and into the bulk of an adjacent organ (43). The catheter is positioned adjacent to the organ and the needles are extended to mechanically puncture the wall and move into the organ with the fiber optic elements. The needle may be withdrawn into the catheter before delivery of laser energy or remain in the organ to serve as an aspiration-irrigation vehicle. Lumens (16) provided in the catheter for carrying the hollow needles may likewise be used for aspiration or irrigation of the passageway. A dilation balloon (19, 20) may be provided in order to temporarily fix and support the catheter while the needle is inserted into the organ. The temperature of the area being treated is monitored by thermomeasuring devices provided on the fiber optic elements. Small puncture holes created by the hollow needles heal quickly and minimize risk of infection.

The present invention is also directed to apparatus (10) for fixing a bone fracture including a first elongated plate member (12) having at least one aperture (64) so as to permit passage of a screw for attachment to the outer surface of a first portion of the bone. The first plate member (62) has a first end (63) and a second end (65) and has a predetermined curvature so as to conform generally to the curvature of the first portion of the bone. The apparatus includes a second elongated plate member (92) having a predetermined curvature so as to conform generally to the curvature of the second portion of the bone. A C-shaped channel is disposed on the first end (63) of the first plate member (62) for selectively removably interlocking the first plate member (62) to the second plate member (92).
