Embroidery machines. -A work-holder especially adapted for holding seamless stochings comprises a stationary frame with channelled side members 12 having the section shown in Fig. 3, connecting end members 10, 11, and hinged clamping members 19. The members 19 are formed at one end with reversely curved parts 22 having free ends united by a short sleeve 30. At the other end fabric-engaging cross-pieces 27 are provided and the clamps are adapted to be connected to the frame by catches 28. The rolled-up part of a stocking is accommodated in the loops 22, in channels 13 of the side members 12, and in hinged parts 24 of the clamp, the end of the stocking being gripped by the part 27.

Branding by heat.-In an electric soldering-iron or branding-iron, the bit has an integral stem which is secured bv its inner end to the handle and passes through a heating-element, consisting of a porcelain tube carrying the heating-wires. which is mounted in a casing secured to the handle so that it can be removed and replaced by a fresh element in the manner of a cartridge, for renewal purposes or for use on a different voltage. In the soldering-iron shown in Fig. 1, the bit a has an integral stem b, which is inserted into a flanged porcelain or like heat-resisting sleeve c, on which the heating-coil d is wound. The stem is screwed into the end of a U-shaped lug e , which projects from a part e screwed to the handle stem h, and fits into a recess in the flange c of the sleeve c. The flange is also provided with grooves c' for the passage of the leading-in wires g, which pass through the handle stem and are secured, together with wires from the mains, to terminals k, the wires being covered with beads. The heating-coils carried on the sleeve c are provided with mica or like electrical insulation and covered with asbestos, and the whole is mounted in a casing f secured to the part c so that it can be removed in the manner of a cartridge. The iron, when in use, may be secured in a clamp m, Fig. 8, pivoted at n to the vertically-adjustable supporting rod l of a stand, the work being brought into contact with the iron.
