    • The present invention provides an environment for DOS executable programs or "modules" that are constructed so that they can cooperate with other similarly constructed programs in sharing memory used by portions of their code or data. This reduces the overall requirements of conventional memory (102). The modules include transient code and data (403), that may be swapped out of conventional memory, and global code and data (402) that is not swappable and stays resident in conventional memory. The present invention reduces conventional memory requirements by allowing modules to share a single block of conventional memory for transient code and data. Instead of swapping transient blocks of modules to and from disk storage (204), the transient blocks are swapped between conventional memory and extended (111) or expanded memory (406). This significantly reduces transfer time compared to overlay schemes, improving performance.

    • A computer-based media data processor for controlling transmission of digitized media data in a packet switching network. When the processor receives a request from a network client node for presentation of specified media data stream presentation unit sequences the processor in response retrieves media data from a corresponding media access location, determines the media data type of each presentation unit in the retrieved media data, and designates each retrieved presentation unit to a specified media data presentation unit sequence based on the media data type determination for that presentation unit. The processor then assembles a sequence of presentation descriptors for each of the specified presentation unit sequences, all presentation descriptors in an assembled sequence being of a common media data type, and then assembles transmission presentation unit packets each composed of at least a portion of a presentation descriptor and its media data, all presentation descriptors and media data in an assembled packet being of a common media data type. The assembled packets are then released for transmission via the network to the client processing node requesting presentation of the specified presentation unit sequences.

    • A method and apparatus for combining writes and avoiding redundant writes are disclosed. Based on values such as overhead message size, largest message size, packet round trip time, cache block size, dirty cache region size and separation, channel throughput, and the identity of cached data values, a write region (60) containing cached data (68) is selected and (if non-empty) is written across the network (10). Depending on conditions, the selected write region includes either two dirty regions (62, 68) and an intervening clean region (70) or only one dirty region. In the latter case, the other dirty region is flushed by a subsequent write operation. The goals of avoiding network congestion, updating the cache promptly, and utilizing available network bandwidth are balanced according to conditions in the cache (60) and on the network (10).

    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for managing software components in a network of computers such as a local area network or the Internet. Each software component includes a binary object and at least one interface to the binary object. Suitable software components include OLE components. The network includes a registry file identifying currently registered components and their locations. The network also includes a component server computer on which unregistered components reside. A database associates software component identifiers with software component locators. Suitable databases include Novell NetWare Directory Services databases and Internet search engine databases. Database objects or entries representing unregistered components are found by a search based on the class identifier of a desired component. Software components found by the search are selected, transferred as needed, and then registered, thereby making them available to clients.
