    • In a production process for a transverse electrical field type active matrix liquid crystal display apparatus, a photolithographic step is eliminated to reduce the cost. There are formed on an insulating substrate carrying thin-film transistors as switching elements, drain electrodes 31 formed by a first low-resistance electrically conductive film 3, drain bus lines 31 connected to the drain electrodes 31, source electrodes 33 and pixel electrodes 34. Islands are formed on the resulting assembly by a semiconductor film. There are further formed on the resulting product gate electrodes 61, gate bus lines 62 and counter electrodes 63. Islands 71 are formed in the same pattern as that of the gate electrodes 61, gate bus lines 62 and the counter electrodes 63. The gate electrodes 61, gate bus lines 62, counter electrodes 63 and the islands 71 can be formed by a sole photolithographic step to reduce the number of the photographic steps and hence the cost.

    • To provide a surface light source prober apparatus which is capable of detecting a point defect on a pixel which can not be detected by a prior art and enhancing the inspection precision and reducing the cost of inspection, a surface light source prober apparatus of the present invention comprises a D.C. light source (14) for irradiating the entire surface of an LCD substrate (1) to be inspected which is placed on a stage (18) with a D.C, light (20); a polarization shutter (12) which is switched for transmitting or intercepting a D.C. light from said D.C. light source, which is incident upon said LCD substrate; and probe means (13) for applying a voltage upon a terminal of said LCD substrate to accumulate electrostatic charge on an auxiliary capacitor of a pixel of said LCD substrate and for reading the accumulated charge, whereby the shutter is controlled so that the entire surface of the LCD substrate to be inspected is uniformly irradiated with the D.C.light from said D.C. light source via said polarization filter only on the point defect inspection.

    • In a liquid crystal display device of a lateral electric field driving system, coloring problem in display is prevented in all the white, intermediate tone and the black display mode. In this liquid crystal display device: one of an incident side polarizing plate (5) and an exit side polarizing plate (9) has its polarizing axis substantially coincide with the direction of the orientation of a liquid crystal layer (10); an optical compensating layer (8) is interposed between at least one of transparent substrates (1,6) and the incident side polarizing plate (5) or the exit side polarizing plate (9) both disposed outside the at least one of the transparent substrates (1,6), the optical compensating layer (8) having a refractive index anisotropy with the other polarity other than that in the refractive index of the liquid crystal layer (10); and, the optical compensating layer (8) has the direction of its anisotropy axis substantially coincide with the direction of the orientation of the liquid crystal layer (10), provided that the orientation direction includes a predetermined pre-tilt angle.
