    • A stabilized opacified detergent composition comprises 100 parts of a surface active agent and 0.2-14 parts (based on the polymer solids) of a cross-linked terpolymer latex which comprises 78-96 parts of styrene or a methylated styrene, 1-20 parts of acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acids, 1-20 parts of glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate and up to two parts of divinylbenzene (per 100 parts of terpolymer). The composition may contain 3.6-83 parts of an alcohol (per 100 parts of surface active agent). The surface active agent may be sodium dodecyl sulphonate, alkali salts of complex organic phosphate esters, alkyl aryl sulphonates, sodium lauryl (ether sulphates or sulphate), octyl and nonyl phenoxy polyethylenoxy ethanols, polyoxyalkylene ethanols, polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acids or fatty acid alkanolamides. In examples opacified liquid detergents comprised (1) nonyl phenol polyethyleneoxyethanol, lauric diethanolamine, sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate, ethyl alcohol, water, dilute H2SO4 to adjust the pH to 7 and the above terpolymer latex; (2) ethyl or isopropyl alcohol, the ammonium salt of the sulphate ester of an alkylphenoxypolyethylenoxy-ethanol, lauric diethanolamide, an alkyl aryl sulphonate, water, dilute H2SO4 to adjust the pH to from 6.5 to 7.5, the above terpolymer latex and optionally nonylphenoxy polyethylenoxy-ethanol; and (3) ethyl alcohol, sodium xylene sulphonate, octyl phenoxy polyethylenoxy-ethanol, lauric diethanolamide, an alkyl aryl sulphonate, water, H2SO4 as in (2) and the above terpolymer latex.ALSO:A cross-linked terpolymer latex comprises 78-96 parts of styrene or a methylated styrene (e.g. vinyl toluene), 1-20 parts of acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acids, 1-20 parts of glycidyl acrylcate or methacrylate and up to two parts of divinylbenzene (per 100 parts terpolymer). The latex is resistant to coagulation by methanol and may have an average particle size of less than 0.5 micron. The latex may be prepared by adding to an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate (as buffer) and the ammonium salt of the sulphate ester of an alkylphenoxypoly(ethyleneoxy)ethanol a catalyst, e.g. ammonium persulphate, and then a first monomer fraction consisting of a major portion of the styrene and the unsaturated acid and all of the divinylbenzene which is then polymerized and followed by a second fraction consisting of the remainder of the styrene unsaturated acid and the glycidyl monomer. The terpolymer may be neutralized, e.g. with diethanolamine or sodium hydroxide.

    • Magnesium hydroxide and calcium chloride are continuously produced by contacting and high shear mixing dolomitic quicklime with magnesium chloride containing brines at 37 DEG C. to the boiling point, thereafter filtering and washing the slurry within 10-360 mins. after the initial contacting. The magnesium chloride content of the brine is at least equal to the stoichiometric quantity required to react with all the calcium hydroxide present and is preferably 3% in excess. The dolomitic quicklime preferably has a particle size finer than 70 mesh (U.S. Standard Screen Scale). As shown, dolomite quicklime from bin 10 and magnesium chloride brine from reservoir 16 is fed continuously to slaker 14 which is fitted with high speed stirrer 22. The resultant slurry is then continuously passed via lines 26, 30a and 30b to filter wheel tub 32 fitted with heating element 36. The magnesium hydroxide solids are collected on the filter wheel 34 and are washed with water spray 38, removed from filter screen by collector 40 and pass via line 42 to drier 44. The calcium chloride brine contained in the wheel is passed via line 48 to two-way valve 48a and thence either to storage via line 50 or to further treatment or processing via line 52.
