    • A locking mechanism as shown in the figure for the contouring head assembly (108) of a belt grinding machine that employs multiple, parallel, abrasive grinding belts (62, 64; 66, 68; etc.) and back-up shoes (254) for pressing the belts against the surfaces on a workpiece to be ground. The locking mechanism secures the contouring head assembly (108) to the bed of the grinding machine. The locking mechanism includes a protrusion, such as a ball (256) that is carried by the contouring head assembly (108) and a pivotable arm (156) is secured to a shaft (151) that is driven by a rotary actuator, that is powered by a hydraulic motor (150). The socket (266) engages the protrusion (256) to securely support one side of the contouring feed assembly. A hydraulic cylinder (158) forces a tapered plunger (258) against the pivotable arm (156) to enhance the locking action.

    • A zero-pressure accumulating conveyor including a bed defined by rotatable rollers mounted in parallel sidewalls and powered by an endless drive chain. Pneumatic actuators lift the drive chain into engagement with the rollers to empower same. Sensor rollers divide the bed into distinct zones. Sensor rollers are retained in operative position relative to the conveyor bed by unique sensor brackets. A primary sensor roller bracket includes a bore with a piston movable there within; the cooperating secondary sensor roller bracket is spring biased in a first direction. Valves, and pneumatic circuitry controlled by such valves, extend along the length of the conveyor. Such valves are operated by the primary sensor roller brackets to regulate the flow of air pressure into the bores of the brackets and into the actuators. The actuators, when the pressure therein is bled-off, allow the chain in a particular zone to drop out of contact with the rotatable rollers. When the bore in the primary sensor roller bracket is pressurized, the bracket moves in an arc that forces the sensor roller below the plane of the conveyor. In such position, the sensor roller is not actuated as items travel thereover, and the life of the accumulating conveyor is significantly extended.

    • A cylindrical grinder (10) is disclosed for effecting stock removal from a cam surface (14) on a workpiece (12), the cam surface including portions having differing radii of curvature and being disposed at differing distances from the axis of rotation of the cam. Means (Fig. 5) are provided for defining a selected velocity profile for each revolution of the cam, the velocity profile having a plurality of accelerationl deceleration segments whereby the velocity of the surface of the cam at the grinding location is selectively varied. Stock removal means are also provided, which includes a grinding wheel and grinding wheel feed control means (Fig. 6). The grinding wheel feed control means includes a Rough Feed Control having means for infeeding the grinding wheel at a plurality of sequentially operable feeds, a Finish Feed Control having means for infeeding the grinding wheel at a plurality of sequentially operable feeds, a Selected Point Sensor for sensing the presence of a selected point on the cam surface at a predetermined angular location, a Grinding Wheel Feed Control for actuating one of the Rough and Finish Feed Controls at the first of the plurality of feeds when the selected point is sensed and for sequentially actuating each of the remaining plurality of feeds when the selected point is sensed each of the next remainder of the same plurality of revolutions.

    • A method and multiple station flexible boring machine for transferring and locating a pallet carrying a workpiece to be machined. The machine has at least two machining stations and a part loading and unloading station adjacent a transfer table carried by a base for carrying, generally locating and transferring a pallet and a workpiece to each station. The pallet has a curvic coupling locator ring with a plurality of circumferentially spaced and generally radially extending teeth for complementary mating engagement with a locator ring on an independent base of each station to accurately radially, axially and circumferentially locate the pallet on the station base. At the load station, the locator ring on the pallet is received in complementary mating engagement with the locator ring on the load base accurately locating the pallet with respect to the base and a workpiece is loaded, accurately located with respect to the load base and clamped to the pallet. The transfer table generally locates and transfers the pallet from the load station onto the base of a first machining station accurately locating the workpiece for machining. After at least one machining operation is performed at that station, the table transfers the pallet and workpiece onto the base of the next machining station. Upon completing all machining operations, the pallet and workpiece are returned to the part load station where the finished workpiece is released and removed and thereafter another workpiece to be machined is loaded, accurately located and clamped to the pallet.

    • Diversion-type switches and cross-type switches are provided for inclusion in suspended rail conveyor arrangements to form a rail conveyor system. Each of said switches includes at least one shiftable rail section movable between a first position of cooperation with spaced rails of one conveyor pathway and a second position of cooperation with spaced rails of another conveyor pathway. Rail alignment and load transmitting elements, in the configuration of coacting fingers and seats, are disposed at the respective end of the shiftable rail section and fixed rail section and coact therewith so that load forces acting on the shiftable rail section act to align the shiftable rail section with the spaced rails of the respective conveyor pathways and so that load forces applied to the shiftable rail section are transmitted directly to the fixed rail section. Operating elements, including cams and cam followers are provided to move the shiftable rail section to separate the rail alignment and load transmitting elements to shift the shiftable rail section and to bring together the rail alignment and load transmitting elements.
