    • 1361086 Purging gases from containers LIQUID GAS ANLAGEN UNION GmbH 20 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 43821/71 Heading A5A [Also in Division F4] Gas is discharged from a container by displacement with an inert gas and the discharged gas is mixed externally of the container with further inert gas before release to the atmosphere. The inert gas may be the product of combustion of the displaced gas if this is combustible, or of fuel from a separate supply. When ammonia is to be displaced the displacing gas is freed from CO 2 , e.g. by absorption in water or on a molecular sieve or by reaction with ammonia. The process is particularly applicable to the purging of inflammable or explosive, or potentially so, gases from ships tanks. Each tank 1 is associated with inert gas generator 2 comprising burner 3 and scrubber and condenser 4. Unit 4 comprises tower 5 and scrubbing water sump 6, water being supplied by pipe 8 and discharged from pipe 7. Pipe 9 from container 1 leads to burner 3 via mixing chamber 11 to which is supplied combustion air at pipe 10. Pipe 13 from fuel supply 12 joins pipe 9 upstream of chamber 11, includes heat exchanger 14 loacted in sump 6. Pipe 9 also has branch 19 by-passing burner 3 and leading to the foot of tower 5. Recycle line 15 including pump 16 and heat exchanger 17 leads from sump to the top of 5, branch line 15a leading to water outlet 44 upstream of 17 to provide an open circuit. Pipe 20 leads gas from 1 via compressor 21 and mixer 22 to the atmosphere at 23. Mixer 22 is supplied with gas from the top of tower 5 via pipe 24, compressor 25 and branch 26. Branch 27 of 24 leads via drying unit 28 to tank 1. Numerals 29-41 represent shut-off valves. To discharge combustible gas from 1 the gas is passed, with valves 30, 31, 33 closed, to burner 3 and the combustion products are scrubbed and cooled in 5. The cooled inert gas withdrawn at pipe 24 is in part directed via line 26 to mixer 20, valve 30 being opened to supply gas from 1 thereto, and in part passes via line 27 to tank 1 as displacement gas. When the displaced gas is insufficiently concentrated to combust, fuel from 12 is supplied to burner 3. If the displaced gas is NH 3 , a portion is supplied to scrubber 5 via line 19 to remove CO 2 from the inert gas. In another embodiment the displaced gas may be scrubbed but not burned. Heat exchanger 17 may be used to heat water in air open or closed circuit at 18.
