    • PURPOSE: To perform an automatic roll wrapper removing step by a method wherein a cutter having a narrow leading end, an outward inclined blade and a smooth rear surface is slid into a lower side of roll of wrapper and moved in a longitudinal direction of the roll. CONSTITUTION: There is provided an apparatus in which a wrapper is cut and removed from a cylindrical roll having the wrapper including at least one wrap overlapped at a circumference of a paper roll R, wherein a blade 36 inclined upwardly and rearward to an edge 39 and having slant leading ends 38 inclined at both sides from the edge to a flat guide surface is slid from the end part of the roll R into the outer-most wrap of the wrapper, moved along a guide rail 48 to cut the outer wrapper. A cutter assembly 22 is provided with one set of gauge rails 34 for position setting the blade 36 and with an air shower pipe 13 for releasing the cut wrap. With such an arrangement as above, when the blade 36 is inserted, a piercing of the wrapper into a radial inward winding part is reduced and a possibility of damaging inner paper is reduced.

    • Method and apparatus for cutting a wrapper on a cylindrical roll (R) in which a blade (36) has a pointed tip joined to an inclined edge extending outwardly and an opposite smooth surface, the blade being moved under the outer wrap of the wrapper but outward of the material of the roll and continuing to be moved along a predetermined path along the length of the roll, with the inclined edge cutting the outer wrapper. The blade is positioned perpendicular to the roll and circumferentially from the outer end of the wrapper. A track having gauge rails (34) resting on the roll (R) spaces the tip of the blade (36) a predetermined distance outwardly from the roll. A gathering device is provided for removing and flattening the cut wrapper.

    • An apparatus for severing and coiling wire (28, 30) wrapped around a bale (20) is described which is capable of de-wiring all types of market bales, has the advantage of reducing the cycle time for processing of a bale and is also easier to build and maintain than previously available machines. For that reason the apparatus comprises a rotating severing blade (26) comprising a plurality of spaced severing teeth wherein the severing teeth engage the wire (38, 30) and sever it either by cutting or by breaking and also engage severed wire and pull it off the bale (20); a spool (54) attached to the severing blade (26) and coaxial therewith about which wires (28, 30) are coiled by the severing blade (26) when removed from the bale (20); and a retention plate (56) positioned across the end of the spool (54) to prevent the coiled wires from sliding off the spool (54).

    • A roller conveyor (10) supports a bale at a cutting and removing station. Side compactors (14,18) and a top compactor compress the bale slightly for positioning it. The bale is pushed against a wire cutting channel (26) in which a blade (28) having a surface that protrudes into and forms a groove in the bottom surface of the bale is passed diagonally across the bale, with the wires springing into a recess in the blade. The blade continues to move, pulling the wire against the back wall of the recess until the wire exceeds its tensile strength and breaks. The bale is then lifted on pins so that a wire pulling blade (34) can be moved also diagonally across the top of the bale. The pulling blade also has a forwardly inclined surface that pushes the bale down while allowing the wires to be captured in a recess in the blade. The blade is moved across the bale, capturing all of the wires and removing them from the bale. Another embodiment uses a turner to rotate the bale to cut and remove wires from adjacent sides of the bale.
