The first and second engaging parts cooperate to prevent a relative rotation between the bearing race and the stator.

    • A clutch hub includes a bottom wall, outer cylindrical portion and inner cylindrical portion that extend in the same axial direction from the bottom wall. The outer cylindrical portion has splines for engagement with friction plates on its outer circumferential surface. Splines formed on an outer circumferential surface of the inner cylindrical portion engage with splines formed on an inner circumferential surface of an inner race of a one-way clutch, so that the clutch hub and the inner race are connected with each other. With this arrangement, the clutch hub undergoes almost no radial displacement even if a large clearance exists between an output shaft and a hole of the clutch hub through which the output shaft is inserted. Further, the distance between the point to which a load due to the self-weight of the outer cylindrical portion and the weight of the friction plates are applied, and the point at which the clutch hub is supported by the inner race, is shortened, whereby the clutch hub is prevented from being excessively inclined. Thus, the posture of the clutch hub is less likely to be changed, and the life of a thrust bearing provided between the clutch hub and adjacent rotating member can be prolonged.

    • The internal gear is a bottomed cylindrical component, which has the boss portion fitted over the outer circumferential surface of the shaft, the disk-shaped flange portion extending radially outwardly from the boss portion, and the cylindrical gear body having a tooth portion in its inner circumferential surface and connecting integrally to the outer circumferential part of the flange portion. The flange portion is virtually conical on its outer side surface and tapered from the outer diameter side toward the inner diameter side, i.e., from the gear body toward the boss portion. This construction is thicker at the boss portion side than at the gear body side. Further, the density of the flange portion is almost inversely proportional to the thickness and is lower at the boss portion side than at the gear body side. The cylindrical gear body has a density distribution such that the central part of the gear body is lower in density than the end portions in a tooth trace direction of the teeth portions.

    • A planetary gear has a lower hole which communicates with a radial groove formed in a carrier plate formed at a position near the end portion of an outer peripheral surface of a pinion shaft on a radially inner side thereof. In the inside of the pinion shaft, an internal lubricating oil path is formed which makes an inner wall of the lower hole communicate with an axial center portion of the outer peripheral surface of the pinion shaft on a radially outer side thereof. The lower hole is perforated in an oblique direction with respect to the axis line of the pinion shaft so that a bottom portion of the lower hole is positioned nearer to the end portion than an aperture portion of pinion shaft. The internal lubricating oil path is constituted by a slant oil path, which opens at the inner wall of the lower hole and extends in an oblique direction, and a radial oil path, which opens at the axial center portion of the outer peripheral surface of the pinion shaft on the radially outer side thereof and extends radially to communicate with an end portion of the slant oil path. The axis line of the lower hole is perpendicular to the axis line of the slant oil path.

    • A thrust bearing is interposed between a carrier plate and a sun gear. Grooves are formed on a surface of a thrust race of the thrust bearing the surface of the thrust race opposes the carrier plate, so that the grooves connect a space at inner peripheral side of the thrust bearing with a space at outer peripheral side of the thrust bearing. A lubricating oil discharge opening is formed in an input shaft shaft, which opening opens near a space located at an inner peripheral side of the thrust bearing.

    • An upshift is effected by releasing an engaged first friction element and engaging a released second friction element. The first fiction element operates on a fluid pressure applied thereto through a first passage and the second friction element operates on a fluid pressure applied thereto through a second passage. An accumulator is provided in the first fluid passage. The accumulator has a back pressure port through which a back pressure is applied thereto by the function of a control valve having a first port connected to the back pressure port, a second port connected to a source of back pressure and a third port connected to a drain. The control valve operates, between a first position connecting the first port to second port and a second position connecting the first port to the third port, on first and second working signal pressures applied thereto. The first working signal pressure is the fluid pressure applied through the second passage to the second friction element and the second working signal pressure corresponds to the engine load. The control valve changes from the first position to the second position when a pressure difference between the first and second working signal pressures reaches a predetermined value. The application of the first working signal pressure to the control valve is inhibited for a predetermined time after an upshift is commanded in the automatic transmission or until the existing gear ratio reaches the gear ratio provided when the upshift is commanded in the automatic transmission.

    • A downshift control device for an automatic transmission is provided in which the transmission is shifted down by releasing an oil pressure from a first engaging element that has been engaged while applying an oil pressure to a second engaging element that has been released. This downshift control device includes an applied pressure control actuator for controlling a pressure to be applied to the second engaging element, by supplying a pressurized oil to a back pressure chamber of an accumulator provided in an oil path to the second engaging element, and removing the pressurized oil from the back pressure chamber. This control actuator receives a first command to supply the pressurized oil to the back pressure chamber from the time when a downshift command is generated to a predetermined time or the time when a detected gear ratio starts being changed, and then receives a second command to remove the pressurized oil from the back pressure chamber until the detected gear ratio reaches a predetermined gear ratio just before completion of shifting. The control actuator then receives a third command to supply the pressurized oil to the back pressure chamber after the detected gear ratio reaches the predetermined gear ratio.
