Valves.-The seating 6 of a rotary disc valve 7 such as that described in Specification 221,942 for attachment to the crank case, especially of two-stroke engines, is secured to the induction chamber 5 such as that described in Specification 225,636, by means of a central bolt 8 and nut 9, or alternatively by means of a bolt screwing into the seating. A cap or plug 10 covers the nut 9 without contacting therewith and takes the pressure of the bar or other clamping-device used to secure the unit to the crank case. Timing of the valve is adjusted by slight rotation of the seating before tightening the nut 9. The nut 9 or bolt 8 may be split to prevent slackening, or spring washers or lock-nuts may be used. Valve gear.-The pin 17, Fig. 3, which engages a slot in the valve and a recess 18 in the crank pin for driving the valve as described in Specification 221,942, is formed with one or more holes 19, grooves, or passages to admit the crankcase pressure to the recess 18 so as to prevent the pin from being forced out of engagement with the valve; or one or more holes 22 or grooves 23 may be formed in the member 18.

Valves.-An admission pipe to the crank chamber of an engine utilizing crank-case compression comprises a member 5, to which may be clamped by means of a nut 8 the housing of the rotary valve described in Specification 221,942. The unit of admission pipe and rotary valve thus formed is clamped to the crank case by a strap bearing on the nut 8 or any other suitable fixing-means. The member 5 makes connection with a fixed carburettor or an extension of the inlet pipe by a pipe 11, a spring washer 12 and a conical leather washer 14 being provided to ensure gas-tightness. The timing of the valve may be altered by changing the angular disposition of the valve housing relative to the member 5.

The strips are held in place by long bars 18 secured by bolts and straps 19. Two strips may be used on each side. The strips may extend into gaps formed in the end plates of the crank case.

Starting.-In a two-stroke or other engine, the ignition-timing control and the throttle-control mechanisms are connected in such a manner as to permit separate movement of each, and to transmit the movement of each to a compression relieving device. As shown, a bar 5 is connected at its ends by rods or wires 6a, 6b to the throttle control lever or device and to the throttle valve, and by rods 7 , 7 to the ignition timing control and timing device on the magneto &c. An intermediate point 10 of the bar is connected by an adjustable rod 8 to a lever 10 acting upon a compression-relief valve 15 in the wall of the engine cylinder 11, preferably above the exhaust port 13. The relief valve 15 thus closes later, relatively to the opening of the throttle valve, as the ignition is retarded. The bar 5 may also operate lubrication feed valves, or switch gear as described in Specification 293,978, [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of], for alternate firing positions in each cylinder.

摘要： 221,942. Budd, J. B. Sept. 3, 1923. Valves.-A rotary disc valve 5, particularly applicable to two-stroke engines, is arranged to be held to its seat by the crank-case pressure, the area of valve exposed to such pressure being reduced by a cover plate 7 of less diameter than the valve. The parts are held together by a bolt 9 fitted with packing-washers 11. A segmental port 13 is formed in the valve and in the plate 7 and side plate 6. The valve is rotated by the engagement with a slot therein, of a spring-pressed pin 15, Fig. 3, sliding in the crank-pin or in a socket 17 screwed therein, engagement of the pin 15 with the port 13 in the valve being prevented by a bridge piece 19 extending across the port. The valve may be balanced by the removal of superfluous material in the track of the driving-pin 13, gradual slopes being formed to allow the pin to mount to the driving-slot.
