    • A suspension system (12) for vehicle (10) includes a support structure (18) of a wheel (14) having a forward rolling axis. The suspension system (12) includes a first link (20) rotatably secured at an inner end (40) to the vehicle (10, 42) and in communication with the support structure (18) of the wheel (14) at an outer end (34). The suspension system (12) includes a second link (22) rotatably secured at an inner end (44) to the vehicle (10, 42) and in communication with the support structure (18) of the wheel (14) at an outer end (36). The system also includes a shock absorber (24) having a first end (50) in communication with one of the first link (20) or the second link (22) and a second end (48) rotatably secured to the vehicle (10, 42). The shock absorber (24) is compressible to allow the support structure (18) of the wheel (14) to absorb impact forces imparted thereto during the travel. The shock absorber (24) is located along a longitudinal axis of the vehicle (10).

    • A wheel suspension system (10) for a vehicle includes a vehicle wheel (12) having a wheel rim (20) and a tire (24) secured to the wheel rim (20). The wheel (12) is secured to a frame portion of the vehicle by a spindle assembly (14). The spindle assembly (14) includes a wheel carrier arm (16) pivotally secured thereto at a pivot point (43), such that said wheel (12) and said wheel carrier arm (16) rotate together about an axis of rotation defined by said pivot point (43). The wheel carrier arm (16) is in communication with a shock absorption device (18). The shock absorption device (18) is located within a space defined by the wheel (12), such that the shock absorption spring device (18) is hidden when the vehicle wheel (12) is viewed from a side direction. The shock absorption spring device (18) compresses upon an impact force containing said vehicle wheel (12). In the most compact form, the wheel carrier arm (16) and the shock absorbing spring device (18) is packaged within the wheel rim volume such that both are hidden when the vehicle wheel (12) is viewed from a front direction.

    • A lift mechanism for a chair device, such as a wheelchair (12), that is intended to engaged the frame of the wheelchair (12) and lift and lower the wheelchair (12) between a ground engaging position and an elevated position. The lift mechanism (242) includes a lift arm having one end secured within and moveable with respect to a vehicle (244). The lift arm (246) has another end which can extend outwardly of the vehicle to engage the chair device. The lift arm (246) has a lift plate disposed adjacent the other end of the lift arm, which is intended to mate with or couple the frame of the wheelchair (12). The lift arm (246) is in communication with an actuator which controls the movement of the lift arm (246) between the ground engaging position and the elevated position. The lift mechanism utilizes a universal coupling system to effectuate elevation in vehicular transportation or architectural setting.

    • A dolly wheel steering system includes a dolly wheel, a dolly wheel spindle in communication with the dolly wheel such that the dolly wheel and the dolly wheel spindle are fixedly secured to one another and are rotatable as a single unit. The dolly wheel spindle is in communication with a coupling device and a steering control system. The steering control system and the coupling device are each in communication with a controller to regulate actuation of each. When a signal from the controller requests utilization of steering control, the coupling device applies a restraining force to the dolly wheel spindle to limit free rotation of the dolly wheel. When the rotation of the dolly wheel spindle is thus restrained, the steering control system can effectuate direct steering control of the dolly wheels to provide precise directional control. When the control indicates the normal dolly wheel capability is desired, the restraining force applied to the dolly wheel spindle by the coupling device is relieved and the steering control system is overridden. The coupling device by its characteristics can provide varying resistance to free dolly wheel spindle rotation for restriction of dolly wheel shimmying and oscillation and where otherwise advantageous to reduce free rotation.
