    • A removable reference laser target for detachable installation at identified target positions on the exterior of a refractory lined high temperature molten metal vessel (10). The target includes a generally rectangular target plate (20) with an elongated slot (21) generally paralleling the long dimension of the rectangle. On the same side of the plate but on opposite sides of the slot are two mounting and adjusting bolts (22, 23) for detachably affixing the target at an identified position on the exterior surface of the vessel. Extending essentially at right angles to the major rectangular surface of the plate is an extension (25, 26) the free end (26a) of which contacts an external reinforcing member and assures precise re-location of the target to be used with laser equipment to provide a reference for determining thickness and/or condition of a refractory lining of the vessel.

    • A metallurgical vessel having a sloping bottom surface (112) which includes a tapered upper surface (112a) terminating at a vertical surface (126b), wherein the vertical surface (126b) terminates at a lower tapered surface for forming a pocket block reservoir (120) such that the pocket block reservoir (120) has a volume of less than or equal to about five percent of the total volume of the metallurgical vessel is disclosed. This pocket block reservoir (120) provides an area for the accumulation of residue metal and slag when the metallurgical vessel is discharged, therefore resulting in a significant increase in the quantity of usable pure metal discharged from the metallurgical vessel and thus contributing to improved volumetric efficiency of the vessel. A method for improving the yield efficiency in the production of metal employing this vessel is also provided.
