    • A fluid from a fermentation process or the like is passed or circulated through chambers of a bipolar membrane electrodialysis unit to separate an ionizable organic acid stream and at least one co-ion or residual stream. The organic acid stream is preferably concentrated (e.g., by recirculation, dewatering or both), and a product is recovered from the concentrated stream, for example by crystallization, and other outputs from the electrodialysis unit may be integrated with overall treatment and applied elsewhere in the treatment system. Depleted feed may be returned upstream to enhance yield, condition the medium or form a by-product. Treatment systems of the invention may replace a cation exchange bed and/or various filter arrangements, and recirculation of the feed and product flows through the unit enhance recovery, separation and quality of the target species. An ED chamber may include a filling of ion exchange beads to maintain a desired operating efficiency as the feed is depleted, and the straightthrough operation effectively operates as pre-filtration stage to provide downstream product-bearing flows with processing characteristics for enhanced treatment, recovery and product quality. When operated to treat a downstream waste, systems allow additional recovery of value in the form of product, unexpended nutrients, co-factors and/or other components present in the waste.

    • A sheet having anion exchange functionality and a sheet having cation exchange functionality are juxtaposed and joined by current bonding into a unitary bipolar membrane. This may be done without added reactants or bonding agents by placing the two-layer assembly between opposed electrodes in a fluid cell, preferably at pressure, and applying power across the cell to split water in a junction region of the membrane assembly. Preferably the anion exchange sheet is treated with an iron salt solution so as to incorporate or immobilize the metal in the polymer during the current bonding process, and enhance operating characteristics of the bipolar junction. Membrane peel strength is comparable to or greater than that of an underlying sheet of ion exchange material, but the bonding is fully reversible, e.g., by soaking in a concentrated solution. Preferably both sheets include an aromatic backbone or cross-linker component. One membrane may be a self supporting membrane, such as a conventional electrodialysis exchange membrane of 5-50 mil (0.12-1.2 mm) thickness, while the other may also be a commercial membrane of opposite exchange type and of similar strength or thickness, or may be specially manufactured to tailor its performance in the completed membrane. For example, one or both starting sheets may be manufactured with a pore former or may otherwise have its porosity, cross-linking, strength, ion rejection characteristics or thickness tailored for more effective bipolar operation -for example, to enhance transport or diffusion, resist shear or mechanical forces, improve chemical resistance to splitting products or species in the intended feed, or the like. Preferably, prior to contacting and bonding, the anion exchange membrane is treated with a group VIII metal salt. The current-bonded unitary bilayer construction remains contact bonded over its surface and resists degradation in normal use.

    • A method for preventing osmotic blistering and other defects in the region of a flex line in a spirally-wound sheet filtration element includes applying an effective glue coating as a sealant to the feedstream side of a sheet in regions where a potential for blistering or layer damage exists, such as a fold line. The glue is applied to the inside of the fold, a spacer is positioned at the coated flex line, and the leaf is refolded and wound with other leaves to form a filter unit, such as a UF, NF or RO filter unit. The coating seals surface defects occurring during the fabrication process as well as the surrounding region, and the cured coating strengthens the region so blistering and delamination do not occur.

    • A process for conditioning of wastewater treatment brines for deep well injection during recovery of heavy hydrocarbon oils in situ. High pressure steam is used to mobilize oil, which is recovered in a mixture of oil and produced water. The produced water is pre-treated by removing residual oil. The remaining water is acidified and steam stripped to remove non-hydroxide alkalinity and non- condensable gases, and is then fed to a crystallizing evaporator, where it i s evaporated from a circulating brine slurry to produce (1) a distillate strea m having a trace amount of residual solutes, and (2) evaporator blowdown stream containing, as dissolved or suspended solids, substantially all of the solut es from the produced water feed. The distillate stream is used as boiler feedwater, either directly or after polishing. The evaporator blowdown is conditioned to remov e substantially all suspended solids and to produce a clear brine solution for deep well injection.
