    • 937,383. Heat-storing apparatus. M. J. FRENCH. Oct. 11, 1961 [Oct. 13, 1960], No. 35021/60. Class 64 (2). Heat-storage apparatus comprises a mass 4 of high thermal capacity housed in an insulated duct 1, a fan 5 for passing air through the duct, a heater 10 for heating the air prior to its entry into the duct and means for reversing the flow of air and distributing the hot air so obtained. In operation, the fan 5 and electric heater 10 switched on to supply heated air to the storage material 4 until the temperature at one end 2 of the duct rises to a predetermined value when a thermostat 8 switches off the fan and heater. The end 2 may communicate with either atmosphere or a system of return air ducts in a building. When heated air is required the fan is run in the reverse direction to draw air through the duct and supply hot air through the end 3 of the duct to an air distribution system. The air temperature is then controlled by means of a bulb 9 filled with volatile liquid and connected with a tube 12 which controls the position of a flap valve 6 admitting unheated air to the duct. The heater 10, is switched on by a device 7 when the temperature falls to a predetermined value. The mass 4 of storage material may be composed of pebbles or hollow tiles and the duct may be composed of or lined with lightweight concrete. Instead of a reversible fan, two fans one at each end of the duct may be employed.

    • The invention provides a continuously variable friction drive comprising first and second members rotatable about a first axis and having convex and concave driving surfaces respectively, a third member rotatable about a second axis intersecting the first axis and having concave and convex driving surfaces arranged respectively to engage the convex and concave driving surfaces on the first and second members respectively, a pivotal mounting for the third member arranged so that the third member may pivot about a third axis, clamping means for causing relative movement between the first and second members thus to force parts of the driving surfaces on the first and second members into close proximity with adjacent parts of the driving surfaces on the third member, said parts providing drive areas through which drive takes place between the first and second members on the one hand and the third member on the other hand and actuating means for pivoting the third member about the third axis thus to vary the distances of said drive areas from at least one of the first and second axes thus to vary the ratio of the drive, the drive areas being substantially symmetrically disposed about a line passing through the intersection of said first and second axes.
