    • @§ An air flow control apparatus is disclosed which is characterized by essentially zero leakage in its closed position, and by minimal air resistance in its open position. The apparatus includes a housing (12) having an interior framework which defines a plurality of troughs (21) of V-shaped cross section, and with each side of each trough including an opening (34). A closure is associated with each trough, which includes a pair of pivotally mounted plates (39, 40) which are movable between a spread apart position covering and closing the openings in the trough, and a collapsed position wherein the plates are substantially aligned with each other and spaced from the associated openings to permit free air flow therethrough. A continuous upstanding peripheral flange (28, 30, 31, 32) surrounds each opening, and a resilient pad (44) is mounted on each plate of each closure so that the resilient pad mates with the outer edge of the flange when the closure is moved to the spread apart position, and so that the outer edge presses into the resilient pad to effect an air tight seal. The axis (41) of the pivotal plates is adjustable to permit the pressure between the plates and outer edge of the flanges to be uniform about the periphery of each opening.

    • A method and apparatus for the leak testing of one or more filters, which requires minimum space, and which comprises a housing (12) adapted to sealably mount the filters (30), supply pipes (40, 41) for introducing DOP particles within the housing and immediately upstream of each of the filters, and a restriction member (54) mounted in the housing upstream of each filter and downstream of the point at which the DOP is introduced. The member (54) may be selectively positioned to assume an operative position transverse to the airstream wherein it acts to condense and mix the airstream and DOP and then disperse the mixture over the full frontal area of the adjacent filter, or a non-operative position wherein the member is substantially withdrawn from the airstream. A sampling device (70) is also mounted downstream of each filter for monitoring the airstream to detect DOP particles, and thereby permit a determination as to whether any of the particles are leaking through or around the filter.

    • 1477570 Air filters FLANDERS FILTERS INC 28 Nov 1975 [5 Dec 1974] 49101/75 Heading B1T [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] An air filter element 49 capable of removing sub-micron sized particles has combined therewith a rectangular frame member 47 in which it is sealably disposed, the opening through the frame being closed, suitably on the downstream side of the filter element, by valve means 60 comprising a pair of rectangular plates of a size conforming to the outline of the frame and each having numerous apertures 56 therethrough, the apertures being distributed over the entire surface of the plates and corresponding in position and number on each plate, the plates being mounted for sliding movement relative each other so that the apertures in each may be brought into alignment to open the valve or taken out of alignment to close the valve and a film of non-evaporating viscous fluid, e.g. petrolatum or silicone grease, being interposed between opposing faces of the plates to prevent lateral flow of air between the plates. The filter elements may comprise pleated sheets of glass, ceramic or cellulose-asbestos. The frames 47 may be wood or pressed chipboard. A plurality of the filter element/frame/valve units may be mounted in parallel in channel members 41, the channels being partially filled with a fluid to form a seal. A clean room is described comprising a false ceiling formed from a bank of the filter element/valve units mounted in the channel members 41, the channel members being sealed to the room walls at the periphery of the filter bank. The space above the false ceiling provides an inlet plenum for gas to be filtered fed in via a blower from a bank of coarse pre-filters mounted behind a wall of the room and filtering air circulating from grills in the room floor. The valve means for each filter element are arranged to be individually operatable from within the room.
