    • A combined pneumatic and gravity outlet mechanism is provided for hoppers such as those incorporated in railway hopper cars. The pneumatic discharge mechanism comprises a pair of lading receiving conduits having openings communicating with opposite sides of the hopper outlet adjacent the sliding gate and converging at their ends in a discharge nozzle. An improved dampering system includes separate dampers in each conduit to permit effective adjustment of the distribution of negative pressure between the respective conduits. Throughout their lengths the conduits are of substantially uniform cross section and angular intersections where the conduit changes direction are eliminated. The gravity discharge mechanism comprises a horizontally sliding gate, controlled by a toggle arrangement connected to the gate in its central region to reduce the likelihood of cocking of the gate during opening or closing movements, and having a geared drive to provide greater pulling forces on the gate.

    • A freight carrying railway car embodying a plurality of doors mounted for pivotal movement about a horizontally disposed axis from an open, loading position to a closed, cargo carrying position. In the open position, the doors serve as ramps onto which one or more motor vehicles may be driven. As the doors are pivoted to their closed position the motor vehicles become suspended upon the doors. A locking arrangement is provided at the top and sides of the doors for insuring that they are locked. Two different types of hold-downs are disclosed for holding the motor vehicles in position upon the closed doors. One of these hold-downs is manually operated and is disposed so that the doors cannot be closed unless the hold-down is in its locked position. The other embodiment of hold-down is automatically movable to its locked position when the door is closed.

    • A freight bracing system particularly adapted for the transportation of freight in railway cars. The system includes a pair of pneumatically urged bulkheads, each supported adjacent one end wall of the railway car. In addition, a movable bulkhead assembly comprised of two panels adapted to be urged apart pneumatically is supported for movement along the length of the car. In this way, load units positioned between the respective pneumatic devices are braced and are pneumatically cushioned at each end.
