    • Apparatus for and method of clamping on the inner surface of a clamping aperture to journal a rotatable tooling bar, in particular to provide air bearing support for a rotatable tooling bar (14) such as a boring bar, are described. One or two mandrels (12, 13) may be provided for the tooling bar (14) to form a complete mandrel assembly with the tooling bar. An air pressure expansible collet (52) is provided on each mandrel (12, 13) so that each may be clamped within a respective clamping aperture (15, 16) such as an aperture on a workpiece (17) itself. Air under pressure is supplied to the two mandrels (12, 13) simultaneously to accomplish, first, an air bearing centering of each mandrel (12, 13) around the tooling bar (14) as a guide; second, an expansion of the collet (52) on each mandrel for clamping of each mandrel within the clamping apertures; and, third, provision of an air bearing support and centering of the tooling bar (14) within the two mandrels (12, 13) during machining for precise machining of the workpiece (17) by the continued air supply.

    • 57 A connection device is described which comprises a male member (12) which may be received in a female socket member (13). Cam means (30) is journaled in an eccentric cam follower surface (34) in the socket (13) for rotation about a second axis displaced from the axis of the socket (13). Means, preferably a fluid member (17), is provided for rotating the cam means in first and second opposite directions so that when the abutment surface (21) of the male member (12) is received in an aperture (38) in the cam means and the cam means is rotated in the first direction, a locking surface (41) of the cam means (30) is moved radially inwardly and in a longitudinal direction away from the entrance of the socket to engage the abutment surface (21) to lock the male member in the socket. Subsequent rotation of the cam means (30) in the opposite direction releases the engagement. An expelling surface (42) may be provided on the cam means to aid in expelling the male member from the socket, preferably by engaging an expulsion surface (22) provided on the male member (12).

    • A quick-connect and quick-disconnect mechanism includes a male member which may be received in a female socket member. Cam means is journaled in an eccentric cam follower surface in the socket and is capable of rotation about a second axis displaced from the axis of the socket. A locking surface on the cam means faces in a longitudinal direction opposite the entrance of the socket and opposite that of a lockable abutment surface on the male member. An aperture in the cam means is sufficiently large to accommodate the entrance of the lockable abutment surface on the male member. The cam means is rotatable within the cam follower surface to move the cam locking surface with a radially inward component and a component of movement in a longitudinal direction away from the entrance of the socket to engage the lockable abutment surface to lock the male member in the socket. The cam means may also have an expelling surface to aid in expelling the male member from the socket.     • A spring actuated chuck wherein a slotted flange, tapered shank tool adapter is clamped to a holder by a spring actuated clamping and ejecting nut assembly which includes a nut having threaded engagement with the holder, a clamping ring rotatably adjustably secured to the nut having clamping lugs to engage the flange of the adapter to clamp the adapter to the holder, an ejector axially retained in the nut and non-rotatably axially slidably engaged with the holder to engage the flange of the adapter thus to release the adapter from the holder, and a latch member extending axially from the holder and engaged with the clamping ring operative upon movement by the flange of the adapter to release the nut assembly for spring actuated clamping movement. Release of the adapter is effected by rotation of the nut in the opposite direction against spring pressure for engagement of the ejector with the flange of the adapter and for re-engagement of the latch member with the clamping ring. The spring actuated chuck herein is further characterized in that the threads of the nut and an annular chamber containing the nut actuating spring are isolated from fine chips and coolant when a tool mounted in the adapter is performing a cutting operation.
