    • A cover (10) to be mounted on a watthour meter base (25) includes a handle (30, 40) carried on the cover to facilitate movement of the watthour meter relative to a meter socket. The handle is generally provided as one or a pair of handles (50, 52) mounted on or unitarily formed with the body of the cover. In one aspect, the handle is a pair of arms (32, 34) extending from the cover, with a cross piece (36) extending between the arms. In another aspect, an ejector handle (100) is moveably mounted with respect to a primary handle (70) carried on the end wall of the cover. Ejector arms (126, 128) coupled to the ejector handle and moveably disposed through the cover and meter base to facilitate separation of the meter from the socket upon movement of the ejector handle.

    • A sealing ring (10) has first and second housings (32, 34) on opposed ends of an annular band (11). A fastener extends between threaded apertures in an end wall of each housing to fixedly engage the ends of the sealing ring (10). One or more slots (120, 122, 124, 136) in the ends of the fastener (100) are alignable with apertures (54, 56, 85, 86) in one of the side walls (36, 38) of each housing (32, 34) for receiving a security device (125). Screwdriver receiving slots (107, 119) are formed in each end of the fastener (100). An enlarged head end (106) on the fastener (100) enables finger rotation of the fastener. The end walls (74) have an elongated upper finger grip surface (62, 82). Bendable mounting tabs (50) extend from each housing (32, 34) into slots (52) in the annular band (11) to fixedly mount the housings to the annular band.

    • Instantaneous current and voltage values are digitized at each of a plurality of electrical utility customer sites (18) and integrated by a processor to calculate electrical power consumed at each customer site (18). A communication interface couples the processor at each customer site (18) to a central processor (12) in a central utility site to communicate the power consumed values of each customer site (18) to the central utility site (10). In a preferred emdodiment, the automatic meter reader apparatus is mounted in an electrical watthour meter socket adapter (40) which plugs into a watthour meter socket (30) at each customer site (18). Telephone modem circuitry mounted in the socket adapter connects to telephone lines to communicate calculated power values from each customer site (18) to the central utility site (10).

    • A sealing ring for an electric watthour meter apparatus has first and second housings mounted on opposed ends of an annular band. A fastener extends through a threaded aperture in an end wall of one housing into threaded engagement with an aperture in an end wall of the opposed housing to fixedly engage the ends of the sealing ring. A plurality of radially intersecting slots in one end of the fastener are alignable with apertures in one of a plurality of side walls of one of the housings for receiving a security device. Screwdriver receiving slots are formed in each of the first and second ends of the fasteners. An axial slot is formed in the second end of the fastener and alignable with apertures in the side walls of the other housing for receiving a security device. An enlarged head end on the fastener enables finger rotation of the fastener. The end walls have an elongated upper end forming a finger grip surface to facilitate movement of the first and second housings toward each other. Bendable mounting tabs extend from the first and second housings into slots in the annular band to fixedly mount the housings to the annular band. Alternately, a notched projection formed on a bottom wall of a cast housing engages an edge of a slot in the annular band and cooperates with a fastener extending through the bottom wall of the housing and the annular band to securely fix the housing to the annular band.

    • A method includes activating a tamper monitoring circuit of a security seal configured to securely lock a utility meter. The method also includes wirelessly transmitting an identification data and/or an integrity information associated with the security seal and/or the utility meter to the external transceiver upon activating the tamper monitoring circuit or being queried by the external transceiver through a transceiver of the tamper monitoring circuit. The transceiver of the tamper monitoring circuit and the external transceiver are configured to securely communicate with each other through a secure protocol. Further, the method includes detecting a tamper condition associated with tampering of the security seal through the tamper monitoring circuit, and wirelessly transmitting data associated with the tamper condition to the external transceiver.

    • A lock apparatus includes a lock body which is slidably mountable over the legs of the shackle. At least one push nut is mounted within a recess carried in the lock body to allow easy insertion of the legs of the shackle through the bores in the lock sections and the at least one push nut, but exerts a substantial force resisting separation of the lock body from the shackle in an opposite direction. The lock body is formed of a unitary one-piece body, or a pair of identical lock sections which are reoriented with respect to each other and inter-engaged to form bores at one edge which receive the legs of the shackle. A method of installing the lock apparatus includes mounting at least one push nut in a lock body and then inserting the legs of the shackle through bores in the lock body and the at least one push nut.

    • A watthour meter socket adapter has housing formed of snap together rear and front housings. The front housing surrounds but allows access to jaw contacts and terminals mounted in the rear housing by a watthour meter and electric power conductors. An aperture in the front housing engages a socket adapter mounting fastener extendible through the aperture to attach the socket adapter to a mounting surface. The fastener and aperture resist separation of the front housing from the rear housing when a watthour meter is removed from the socket adapter. A clip extends from the front housing through an aperture in a terminal cover attachable to the front housing and receives a seal lock member. Another clip on the front housing extends through the terminal cover and is engaged by an expandable ring lock clip. A meter surge guard is removably mountable to the rear housing and exteriorly of the front housing.
