    • A system and method are provided that overcome the previously described limitations of prior art systems. The computer system, in fact, uses a set of information objects to interface with heterogeneous information sources. Information objects can be combined to form tasks that can be added, deleted and modified without requiring any modifications to the underlying program. In addition, the computer system allows users to navigate through a task and automatically generates links to related tasks based on the contextual information in which each step in the task is performed. As a result, links to related tasks do not have to be defined ahead of time, but rather can be dynamically generated at run time. This is accomplished by associating a semantic type or multiple semantic types with the information generated during each step. This allows the system to present links to tasks that utilize the same semantic types generated during the previous step. Thus, if a new task that operates on a given semantic type is created, links to that task are automatically generated during processing of related tasks without requiring any modifications to the underlying program. Semantic types, therefore, allow the system to capture, convert and integrate multiple heterogeneous data sources that contain data pertaining to the same entity. Furthermore, a graphical editor is provided that allows tasks to be easily added, deleted or modified to adapt to changing business processes without requiring new code to be written.

    • Some embodiments of the invention include methods for identifying clusters in a database, data warehouse or data mart. The identified clusters can be meaningfully understood by a list of the attributes and corresponding values for each of the clusters. Some embodiments of the invention include a method for scalable probabilistic clustering using a decision tree. Some embodiments of the invention, perform linearly in the size of the set of data and only require a single access to the set of data. Some embodiments of the invention produce interpretable clusters that can be described in terms of a set of attributes and attribute values for that set of attributes. In some embodiments, the cluster can be interpreted by reading the attribute values and attributes on the path from the root node of the decision tree to the node of the decision tree corresponding to the cluster. In some embodiments, it is not necessary for there to be a domain specific distance function for the attributes. In some embodiments, a cluster is determined by identifying an attribute with the highest influence on the distribution of the other attributes. Each of the values assumed by the identified attribute corresponds to a cluster, and a node in the decision tree. In some embodiments, the CUBE operation is used to access the set of data a single time and the result is used to computer the influence and other calculations.

    • An active path designer tool allows users to combine graphical workflow editing and data binding in a web based framework. The tool may be built on top of a web based extensible client framework (XTCF) to allow a client's information technology (IT) personnel to graphically design activities. A folder based display of available nuggets allows users to drag and drop nuggets onto a canvas. The users can then establish connections between nuggets by graphically drawing an edge between nuggets. The edges thus provide a flow of work for the activity. In addition, users can specify data bindings to be transferred between nuggets by means of input and output pop-up menus on each nugget. An input menu may contain a list of data available for input to a nugget, while an output menu may contain a list of data available for output. A user may draw a line between input and output menu entries to bind an output of one nugget to an input of another nugget. In addition, an underlying XTCF platform allows a graphic display of the nuggets to be generated based on independently stored data and formatting information, which may be freely manipulated by a user.
