摘要： A method of manufacturing a transfer device comprising an optically variable transferable layer (3) on a carrier (1). A continuous adhesive layer (6) is coated on the transferable layer (3) and is selectively treated, for example by printing, to provide areas which are not bondable to a substrate under normal transfer conditions. When the treated adhesive layer (6) is contacted with a substrate (8) under normal transfer conditions, only non-treated areas of the adhesive adhere to the substrate so that only areas of the transferable layer (3) corresponding to the non-treated adhesive areas are transferred to the substrate (8) on separation of the carrier (1) and substrate.

The substrate is partially provided with an indicia receptive coating (5) such that at least part of the optically variable effect (3) remains visible. Possible optically variable effects include diffraction, interference and polarisation effects. These effects are generally visible in white light. A method of manufacturing articles comprises providing a substrate (2) which includes a structure (3) for generating optically variable effects. A partial continuous indicia receptive coating (5) is provided on the substrate (2) such that at least part of the optically variable effect remains visible. An article manufactured in this way may receive security printing (6) on the indicia receptive coating.

摘要： A tamper resistant security seal is a laminated tape having a transparent carrier layer (2); an optical, diffraction pattern defining layer (3,4); and an adhesive layer (6) for adhering the tape to a substrate. The optical pattern, such as a hologram, defined by the optical pattern defining layer is visible from outside the laminate. The optical diffraction pattern defining layer (3) is formed by a polymeric layer permanently bonded to the transparent carrier layer which, when heated, causes the diffraction pattern to undergo an irreversible change. The adhesive is a pressure sensitive adhesive. An additional removable support layer may be provided on the carrier. The laminate is constructed so that a reduction in temperature below 0.degree. C. will cause an irreversible change in the diffraction pattern, or is such that subsequent to such a temperature reduction, attempted removal of the tape from a substrate will cause an irreversible change in the diffraction pattern.
